Dear Sir
In reply to yours of Decm 6th asking me in conjunction with Messrs Elder Dutton & Stirling to act on a committee for the purpose of raising subscriptions for the South Australian University - I beg to say that I will do all in my power to further the object.
You already habe ben informed of the Death of Mr Stirling which reduces our committee to three members - and unfortunately private differences amongst those prevent a very hearty cooperation. I would therefore suggest the appointment of one or two others to increase the number. I have called on Mr Elder & Mr Dutton both of whom have informed you by last mail of their willingness to do what they could, bt oth suggest the desirability
[Page 3]
of having a well filled subscription list from the colony before bringing the matter before the colonists in London. Also that a list of all names of parties who hve circulars sent them from the colony be finished. If I were to make a further suggestion it would be to allow no time to be lot in attaining colonial subscriptions - especially when most industries are prospering - The same reason will hold good here, and when the committee think they have the proper data (?) an effort will be made to see all likely contributors.
Trusting the undertaking will prove successful
I remain
Yours sincerely
David Murray

I am in receipt of your memo summoning me for a meeting of the Council of the University Association on Tuesday next. In reply I regret I feel it my duty to resign my seat on the Council as I fear that for some time to come the state of my health

Dear Sir
I have never considered myself as a member of the Council of the University; and yet, when you mention it, I have a very faint recollection of a circular to that effect. If, however, I am really a member, I must beg to tender my resignation as I cannot give the time which so responsible a position demands. I have to apologize for handing to the reporters notices of intended meetings but I thought they were for the information of the press. Perhaps any notices you may require to send in future will be addressed.
