TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] 9 March 1873 Rev. H. Read Report of classes held in 1873 [Page 2] Mitcham, March 9. 1874 Geo. Young Esq Hon. Secy to Adelaide University, Dear Sir, I desire to state to you for the information of the Council, that the Classes under my charge in connection with the University Association were carried on last year until the middle of November, when they ceased according to my instructions for the December Vacation. The number of students in attendance to the class (?) was four. I had one Class for Greek, and one for Latin, and all the students attended each. Of the four in attendance, one had made some progress previously, and he was able to read ___ and Casar with exercises in Latin and Greek Prose Composition: one had been previously under instruction, but was less advanced: two were quite beginners in Greek and their studies were elementary. I believe that they all made satisfactory progress, and [Page 3] felt themselves considerably improved in what they learned. I am now awaiting the instructions of the Council to resume these Classes, as the year is advancing: and I would also ask if the Council desire any alterations to be made in the hours of attendance or otherwise, that I may be prepared to carry out their wishes in the ensuing session. TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] 10 April 1874 Letter to S.A. Institute. [Page 2] University Association Adelaide 10th April 1874 Sir In the course of communications which the Council of the Adelaide University Association had last year with Government, the Chief Secretary stated that he would recommend the Trustees of the South Australian Institute to provide accomodation as far as possible for the present wants of the University. And the Council have also had other reasons to believe that the trustees will be willing to grant them the needful accomodation. Arrangements being now in progress for commencing the classes in connection with the Association for the Sessions of 1874, the Council instructs me to enquire whether the Trustees can give them the daily use during the remainder of this year, of the room or if practicable of two rooms in which to hold such classes. TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] 14 April 1874 Secretary to S.A. Institute [Page 2] April 14 1874 Sir I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 10th Inst. in asking if accommodation can be afforded in the Institute for the Classes which the Council of the Adelaide University Association prepare to establish shortly. In reply I am directed by the Board to say that there is one room on the first floor of the Institute building, which is (with the exceptions noted below) of liberty in the daytime & in the evenings of Wednesday & Saturday, there is also a room on the ground floor at liberty nearly every evening, so that I may say there is in effect a room of liberty each day in the week & also one each evening. The exceptions referred to above as regards the upstairs room (known as the ___ Room) are the following - the Institute Commission meets in it on the Friday afternoons but its meetings will I imagine come to an end before the beginning of May, and the [Page 3] Institute examinations are held in it, the examination this year will probably commence on Tuesday May 12th & will last three or four days - during these days however the classes might perhaps be provided for the downstairs room (known as the coffee room) Should it happen that a considerable number of candidates presented themselves for examination it would be necessary to engage a room elsewhere for the examination in which case the Classes would not be interfered with, but this of course is uncertain at present. I am instructed to say that the Board regret that the accommodation which they can offer is so limited, such as it is however it is quite at the service of the University Association. [Copy] Soliciting Support for the Bill to Incorporate the University of Adelaide

TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] University Association 6th October 1874 Sirs The Ministry being about to introduce into Parliament a Bill for Incorporating and endowing a University in Adelaide, the members of the Council of the Adelaide University Association knowing that you take a deep interest in the establishment of such an Institution have instructed me to request in their names that you will give your valuable aid in carrying the Bill through Parliament. When a similar measure was submitted unofficially to the Honorable the Speaker some months since he was of opinion that it could be introduced only as a private Bill. The Council have been assured on all hands(?) that this opinion was manifestly erroneous and that the precedents referred to by the Speaker did not apply. But in the event of his still holding the same view they would venture to ask that if the Ministry do not take the ___ of the house on this question you would be good enough to take the needful steps for doing so. The Act incorporating the University of Melbourne was passed as a public measure, and that Act has been closely followed in preparing the Bill here. I have the honour to be Your very obedt Servt Geo. TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] 7th November 1874 University Association Dear Sir I have very great pleasure in now informing you that an act to Incorporate and Endorse the University of Adelaide has been passed by both Houses of Parliament, and yesterday received the assent of the Governor. The act of which I send you a copy was carefully drafted by the Council of the Association and very few alterations have been made in their draft. These are indicated in the copy sent by you by a red line drawn underneath the words that were introduced in the Legislature. You will see that your Deed of Gift in its entirety is set forth in the Act. Also that besides an annual money Contribution equal to five per cent upon all invested funds - not exceeding £10000 per annum - and the gift of a site for Buildings, the Legislature have endorsed the University with 50,000 acres of land. [Page 2] The Council of the Association instruct me now in communicating this gratifying intelligence to you, to offer their sincere congratulations upon as satisfactory a result having been obtained. Their own labours in connection with the Institution will shortly cease, but they desire once again to express their abiding sense of the importance of that act of generosity on your part which first gave rise to their labours, and which has now borne fruit in a similar act on the part of the Honorable Thomas Elder. TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] University Association Adelaide 5th Dec 1874 Sir When this Association was originated in 1872, you kindly promised to assist the project not only by your personal countenance and advice but by a contribution of £100. On several occasions subsequent to your departure from Adelaide, Mr John Adam Fergusson alluded to this in conversation with me, stating that he held your authority for paying this money whenever it should be required. In consequence however of the uncertainty, which for some time existed as to whether the project would be persevered in or abandoned, the Council did not while he remained in the Colony feel justified in calling up any of the subscriptions. [Page 2] Now that by the passing of an Act of the local Parliament for incorporating and endowing the University of Adelaide and by the liberality of Mr. Elder, the objects of the Association are being attained, they are desirous of receiving the sums subscribed and I take advantage of your visit to Adelaide to remind you of your promise and to request that you will have the goodness at your convenience to give instructions for the payment of the hundred pounds.
