I have the honor to be Sir your obedient Servant _ DeMole Scy M of J&E [Enclosure Page 1] 10th February 1875 No. 6 Sir In my dispatch No. 5 of the 9th Instant, I have notified to you that Her Majesty will not be advised to exercise Her power of disallowance in respect (among other Acts) of the Act No. 20 of last Session to incorporate and endow "the University of Adelaide". Her Majesty's Government fully recognize the claims of South Australia to possess a University endowed with similar privileges to those which have been accorded to the Universities of Sydney and Melbourne, and it will be a matter of congratulation to them when the time shall arrive for the University to grant the ordinary Degree which, in accordance with the English practice, have been sanctioned in the case of the Universties of Sydney & Melbourne, namely the degrees of Bachelor and Master in Arts, and Bachelor and Doctor in Law, Medicine, & Music. But I am of opinion that it may be desirable to take the present opportunity of intimating to you, as I have lately been obliged to do to the Governor of New Zealand, with regard to the New Zealand University, that Her Majesty's Government would feel difficulty in extending the customary recognition to the degrees of Bachelor and Doctor in Science, which are referred to in the 12th Section, and which has not been recognised in the case of the Universities of Sydney and Melbourne and the great English Universities on which these [Enclosure Page 2] new institutions are modelled. I have not of course considered this objection to the 12th Section, at so early a period in the existence of the University of Adelaide, to be of sufficient weight to justify me in advising Her Majesty to interfere with the operation of the Act.
