Hanson Chancellor of the University of Adelaide Sirs I have the pleasure to acknowledge receipt of your letter of 24th instant, conveying in very flattering terms an expression of the manner in which the Council of the University are pleased to regard any Services as Secretary to the University Association, and enclosing a cheque in my favour £105:-:-. While it was certainly with no expectations of pecuniary recompense that I undertook and for upwards of two years discharged to the best of my ability the duties of Secretary to the Association, and while it has been and always will be to me a source of gratification to know that those services are believed to have been in any degree instrumental in contributing to the establishment of a University in Adelaide, I yet cheerfully accept the honorarium in the Spirit in which it is offered, and beg to tender my sincere acknowledgements to the Council. TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] Folkestone 9th July 75 Dear Sir As a friend & myself are most anxious of obtaining employment in one of the colonies, I beg leave to trouble you to afford us any information that is in your power, as to how we could go out, with as little expense as possible, and in which of the colonies we should be most likely to find employment. For the last few years [Page 2] we have both been engaged as bankers clerks in this country, but as we are convinced that we might better ourselves abroad, we take the liberty of addressing you as the most likely person to give us the most necessary information, which by so doing you will greatly oblige. Apologising for troubling you. I am Dear Sir Your obedient Servant T.S. Hazlock[?]

TRANSCRIPTION [Page 1] Dep. A-General recd 11/11/75 Receipt of £650 in reference to new professors & binding books Recd at Council Meeting 26/11/75 minute book pp 98-9 [Page 2] 29 Sept 75 Sir, I am directed by the Agent General, who is now in Germany engaged in emigration business, to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated 11th August enclosing Draft at 60% for £650 which has been placed to the credit of the Council of the University. You also enclose lists (2) of Books required by Professors Read and Davidson, and you have given such very explicit and intelligible instructions that there will be no difficulty whatever in carrying out your wishes. At my request Mr King called here yesterday, and received the order for the Books above referred to, and a copy of that portion of your letter referring to them & to Books generally, and he perfectly understood [Page 3] what the Council require. I have requested Professors Tate and Lamb to prepare lists of their Books and to procure them at Messrs Kings so that the Books will all be bound and stamped uniformly. Professor Ralph Tate FGS _ writes to say that he is making an effort to leave for Adelaide in the SS "Glenelg" which sails about the 28th October but I hardly think that he will be ready by that time. I nearly forgot to mention that the Board of Selectors were unanimous in the selection of Professors Tate and Lamb. The formal papers will most likely be sent to you by next mail. I am, Sir, Your obedient Servant James Deering[?] Sect of Ag General PS. As the council will naturally be anxious to know something about the gentlemen selected, I enclose 2 copies of Mr Lamb's testimonials and one (the only one received) of Mr Tate's.
