Animal Ethics & Welfare Training

The University of Adelaide must ensure that staff and students are aware of their responsibilities under the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (7th Edition 2004).

It is expected that all new University of Adelaide animal users will undertake training in Animal Ethics in order to obtain clearance to work with animals. In addition, HDR students must complete the Animal Ethics online assessment in order to satisfactorily complete their Core Component of the Structured Program (CCSP).

What Training is Available?

A half day animal ethics induction course was  held on Friday 2 March 2012.  New staff and students are urged to attend the annual "Introduction to the use of animals in science - ethical considerations" (refer website link). This course is augmented by an online learning and evaluation program providing assessment certification.

Online Training in Animal Ethics

The Animal Ethics Committees of the University of Adelaide and the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science with support from the University of South Australia conducted a one day training course for staff and honours/postgraduate students in March 2010 called The Use of Animals in Science: Ethical & Practical Considerations.

The course is reproduced here as 12 videotaped presentations and associated PowerPoint slides. Required resource material.

The broad objective of the course is to draw attention to ethical questions that must be considered when scientific and teaching activities relating to the conditional use of animals are proposed. There is particular emphasis on the responsibilities involved and on the importance of compliance with the Australian Code
