What are the IBP-R program objectives?
- To provide induction into the academic, linguistic and cultural conventions relating to research in the researcher’s own disciplines.
- To foster autonomy in negotiating research and language outcomes.
- To develop independent communication skills and proficiency in English appropriate to the researcher’s own area of specialisation.
- To develop techniques of citing and attribution to express critical perspective.
- To develop spoken English and presentation skills for communicating research.
- To develop sentence-level English grammar and self-editing skills.
How is the program structured? And what are the options?
There are thirteen discrete workshops, each covering a key topic in research communication, together with a series of discipline/paradigm-specific seminars and individual appointments focussing on your research project. There is a also a compulsory induction workshop for all international Higher Degrees by Research candidates and for participants in the full program.
Each international student talks to their supervisor/s about the most appropriate course option for them and arranges their participation with the IBP-R lecturers after a diagnostic task at the IBP-R Induction. The outcomes could be any of the following:
- Full participation in the IBP-R in the first semester of their candidature (attend all seminars and at least eight workshops and complete all assignments).
- Negotiated participation I in the IBP-R (attend seminars and workshops as appropriate to needs and complete one draft research proposal)
- Negotiated participation II in the IBP-R (complete one draft research proposal)
- Exemption from any participation in the IBP-R (only for students who have already completed the IBP-R or equivalent)
Local students can attend one workshop or attend as many as you like. It is up to you.
What is the time commitment?
Each face-to-face workshop and seminar runs for about two hours. Participants in the full program commit to four hours per week for 13 weeks. Assignments are related to the Core Component of the Structured Program and/or the production of research writing and oral presentations. No extraneous work is required.
What are the assignments?
Participants in the full program complete two drafts of their research proposal or a negotiated research document and present a 20 minute seminar in the IBP class. All three assignments are co-marked by their supervisor and IBP seminar lecturer. There are optional feeder tasks related to each seminar and lecture.
Do I need to complete all assignments within the 12 weeks?
No. The program has been designed with the work schedules of busy researchers in mind. There are suggested deadlines, but each participant is welcome to negotiate their own deadlines with their IBP lecturer based on their commitments and/or their CCSP deadlines.
