Exploring Supervision Program 2013

In response to your feedback, we are continuing in 2013 to offer the Exploring Supervision Program in 'intensive' mode, outside of the teaching semester.  The program structure & requirements remain the same as previously, but there is, we hope, more opportunity for you to participate!

Upcoming workshops are listed below, along with information on the HDR Supervisor Induction workshop. Further 2013 series will be scheduled shortly - watch this space.

All staff are welcome to attend all or any of the individual workshops whenever they are offered - you don't have to come to all three in a row.

But please do register with us first, using the links provided to access the on-line enrolment system. For more background information on the program, and for further details on taking the program for the purposes of HDR supervisor registration, please return to the Exploring Supervision Program home page.

Exploring Supervision #1 - The project perspective
Utilising case studies, research and reflection on experience, this workshop explores higher degree supervision from a project, and project management, perspective. We examine strategies, tools and resources for the establishment, maintenance and close-out of successful higher degree projects, and we give participants an opportunity to develop and collaboratively critique their own 'redagogical' approaches.

Exploring Supervision #2 - The people perspective
This workshop explores higher degree supervision from a 'people' perspective, asking supervisors to respond to the key interpersonal challenges that supervision presents, and addressing a range of communicative, social and cultural issues. We consider in particular the impact on supervision of the ongoing internationalisation of the research sector.

Various policies, resources and strategies will be presented, and tested through case studies and role play.

Exploring Supervision #3 - The product perspective
This workshop looks at supervision from the product-process perspective, addressing one of the most common questions asked by HDR supervisors: 'How do I best help my student develop as a good academic writer and more broadly as an effective research communicator?'.

We will examine what the research says about this issue, and we will review and test out a range of strategies using examples of students' research writing.

The needs of both native and non-native writers of academic English will be considered, and supervisors are encouraged to bring along typical or problematic examples of student writing for the workshop to assist with.

Supervisor Induction Program
At this workshop you will consider the strategic context of research training at the University of Adelaide, and you will become familiar with the important milestones (together with the associated policies, practices and paperwork) of research degrees. You will also look at the roles and obligations of supervisors, and the range of available educational and support services.

by arrangement Research Project presentations
Staff who enrol in the full module of the Exploring Supervision Program undertake an investigation of a researcher education issue within their discipline, and present a seminar outlining their findings. The seminar can be delivered to a group of colleagues within the School/Discipline/Faculty, or as a paper at a relevant education or disciplinary conference.
