Supervisor Induction Program
If you wish to be registered as a supervisor of postgraduate research students at the University of Adelaide, in either principal or co-supervisor capacity, you must complete the Supervisor Induction Program.
You can do this online, or by attending one of the regular face-to-face induction workshops, held in February and June each year. Additional sessions are convened from time to time, subject to demand. The program provides an essential introduction to the policy, practice and strategic context of HDR (ie. higher degree by research) supervision at the University.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
What does the program involve?
You will consider the strategic context of research training at the University of Adelaide, and you will become familiar with the important milestones (together with the associated policies, practices and paperwork) of research degrees, and the obligations of supervisors ... Oh, and we'll also talk about the rewards of supervision, and the wonderful contribution it can make to your research career.
How will your program completion be recorded on the Supervisor Register?
When you have satisfactorily completed the program, either by full participation in the face-to-face version, or by submitting a satisfactory answer sheet for the online version, we will notify the Adelaide Graduate Centre, who will record your completion on the Register of Supervisors. To ensure that your completion is tracked in this way, face-to-face session participants must enrol in advance, and must sign in to the workshop on the day. On request we can also provide you with a certificate of attendance for your own records.
What are the differences between the online and face-to-face versions?
The main difference is that you have to provide your own coffee if you are taking the program online. Otherwise, the content of the two programs is effectively identical, and they should take about the same amount of time to complete.
We have designed the Induction Program with the intention that it be both an enjoyable and educational experience. In the face-to-face version we get you to work closely with colleagues in small groups, exploring and commenting on aspects of supervision; we want you to learn by doing rather than by being talked at. While we have tried to replicate this exploratory approach in the online version, we do note that many of our face-to-face participants report that meeting and engaging with colleagues from all over the university is a wonderful aspect of the live session.
Can special face-to-face Induction sessions be organised for my School &/or at different campuses?
Absolutely. If it's not viable for you to get to our regular scheduled sessions, we can arrange one for you, subject of course to a suitable time and venue being organised. We need around 12 starters for a full session, but if you have smaller numbers we might be able to arrange something suitable. Contact us to discuss
