Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Research)

Professor Mike Brooks was appointed to the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) in July 2008. 

Professor Brooks is a leading international researcher in computer vision and image analysis. His work has seen wide commercial use in the security and defence industries and has resulted in international awards. At the time of his appointment, Professor Brooks held the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Strategy), following on from his successful role as Chair of the Research Quality Framework Board, where he played a major part in auditing the University's research capability. 

Professor Brooks is Research Leader of Video Surveillance within the Australian Centre for Visual Technologies at the University of Adelaide and is a former Head of the School of Computer Science, where he holds the Chair in Artificial Intelligence. 

He has published numerous influential papers in the field of computer vision, image analysis and surveillance and has won many Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Grants for his research, and was a Program Leader in the Cooperative Research Centre for Sensor Signal & Information Processing. Professor Brooks is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and the Australian Computer Society, Associate Editor of the International Journal of Computer Vision, and serves on the Board of National ICT Australia.


About the Role

The role of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) is to provide leadership and vision in achieving the University's strategic goals, particularly in relation to research and research training policy across the University.

The key responsibilities of the area include:

  • Research related planning and policy, involving quality assurance in research and research training;
  • Monitoring and communication of major changes in government research policy and the development of strategies in response to such policy changes;
  • Development of strategies to facilitate growth in University revenue to support research related activity;
  • Co-ordination of those aspects of the University budget for research related income and expenditure;
  • Award of postgraduate scholarships;
  • Representation of the University on external research related Boards, Committees and other forums and communication to the University community of the outcomes of this representation as appropriate;
  • Development and support of research alliances and partnerships with high quality research institutions, nationally and internationally;
  • Development and implementation of communication strategies to promote the University's research capability; and
  • Regulatory compliance with relevant external legislation applicable to the conduct of research.
