Animal User Training & Workshops

Compulsory Animal Ethics Training Course

The Animal Ethics Committees of the University of Adelaide and the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science hold a one day course for staff and honours/postgraduate students each year in March.

The annual course is particularly aimed at new users but is of interest and value to animal users generally. The broad object of the day's programme is to draw attention to some of the ethical questions that must be considered when scientific and teaching activities relating to the conditional use of animals is proposed. There is particular emphasis on the responsibilities involved and on the importance of compliance with the Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes - 7th Edition 2004. In addition the programme raises wider issues in relation to the humane use of animals.

What if I missed the Annual Animal Ethics Course?

Animal Ethics recommends that University of Adelaide students and staff who were unable to attend the compulsory Animal Ethics Training Day:

  1. Download and read the 7th Edition of the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for scientific purposes – the Australian rulebook and guide for all animal users.
  2. Familiarise yourself with the content of the Animal Ethics website: University of Adelaide Animal User's Handbook, University Policies & Guidelines, Application and Annual Reporting forms, and other information.
  3. Attend the next Compulsory Animal Ethics training day in 2009.  Contact Animal Ethics to be added to the email list for this course.

Compulsory Induction Training  for Users of Laboratory Animal Services Facilities

The principle objective of this training program is to provide animal users with the necessary information that will enable them to use the Laboratory Animal Services managed animal facilities efficiently, productively and ethically, by having the highest regard for the policies and procedures in place to ensure animal well-being and experimental integrity and reliability.

Optional Practical Animal Handling Training

These practicals are intended as an introduction to commonly used laboratory animal procedures and techniques for new students and less experienced staff. They will be conducted by the University of Adelaide Animal Welfare Officer and Laboratory Animal Services.  Scheduled Practicals and Workshops are advertised here and on the Animal Ethics website.  Ad Hoc practical training in animal handling and basic procedures are available on request to the Animal Welfare Officer and Laboratory Animal Services.

Optional On-Line Training from CCAC

All personnel involved with the use of animals in research, teaching and testing must be adequately trained in the principles of animal care and useand the ethical issues involved in animal use. The Canadian Council for Animal Care has made freely available 12 web-based basic training modules for animal users to pursue at their own pace. The key principles are relevant to Australia and internationally.
