The annual Animal Ethics Induction Training Course is particularly aimed at new users but is of interest and value to animal users generally. It is expected that all new University of Adelaide animal users will attend this Animal Ethics Induction. The broad object of the course is to draw attention to ethical questions that must be considered when scientific and teaching activities relating to the conditional use of animals are proposed. There is particular emphasis on the responsibilities involved and on the importance of compliance with the Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes - 7th Edition 2004. In addition the program raises wider issues in relation to the humane use of animals.
All University of Adelaide HDR students using animals for research must complete this course and the associated MyUni Animal Ethics Evaluation and Assessment program, in order to obtain the certification required as part of Core Component documentation. (See point 4 below).
Animal Ethics recommends that University of Adelaide students and staff unable to attend the compulsory Animal Ethics Training in March 2013:
Download and read the 7th Edition of the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for scientific purposes – the Australian rulebook and guide for all animal users.
Familiarise yourself with the content of the Animal Ethics website: University of Adelaide Animal User's Handbook, University Policies & Guidelines, Application and Annual Reporting forms, and other information.

The principle objective of this training program is to provide animal users with the necessary information that will enable them to use the Laboratory Animal Services managed animal facilities efficiently, productively and ethically, by having the highest regard for the policies and procedures in place to ensure animal well-being and experimental integrity and reliability.
There are two steps to this program in 2013:
Personnel who wish to use specialist laboratory animal equipment provided by Laboratory Animal Services are required to receive training before they can access the equipment. Contact the LAS Medical School animal facility supervisor to discuss the relevant requirements and the equipment available.
More information and registration: Practical Training in Laboratory Rat & Mouse Techniques.
These practicals are intended as an introduction to commonly used laboratory animal procedures and techniques for new students and less experienced staff. They will be conducted by the University of Adelaide Animal Welfare Officer and Laboratory Animal Services. Scheduled Practicals and Workshops are advertised here and on the Animal Ethics website.
Ad Hoc practical training in animal handling and basic procedures are available on request to the Animal Welfare Officer and Laboratory Animal Services.

All personnel involved with the use of animals in research, teaching and testing must be adequately trained in the principles of animal care and useand the ethical issues involved in animal use. The Canadian Council for Animal Care has made freely available 12 web-based basic training modules for animal users to pursue at their own pace. The key principles are relevant to Australia and internationally.

AALAS free on-line training: Introduction to Research Animal Methodologies Courses. Select "Continue without logging in" option.
The American Association for Laboratory Animal Science Introduction to Research Animal Methodologies series provides an introduction to working with animals in the laboratory environment. Each course in this series offers information that is both relevant to all research animals and specific to the particular species featured. The first 7 lessons are similar in all courses of this series. Differences in these lessons relate mainly to the (USA) regulatory coverage, housing requirements, and the zoonotic hazards of each animal species. The remaining lessons present information that is more specific to each animal species, such as biological features, anaesthetic doses, and biomethodologies.
