Institute Manager

 Joanna Close

Jo Close commenced with the Institute in early 2009.  Her experience in the bioscience sector has been diverse and includes: initiating a $3.3 million collaborative program to facilitate medical device product development in South Australia; designing methods and analysing results for South Australia’s first bioscience research and industry survey; preparing a strategic plan for South Australia’s most successful medical research institute; and providing support to South Australia’s first bioscience angel investment group.

Research Centre for Reproductive Health

Co-Directors:
Professor Sarah Robertson
Associate Professor Jeremy Thompson

A/Prof Jeremy Thompson began working within the Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the University of Adelaide in 1999 and has since had numerous responsibilities including Director of Clinical Embryology and Deputy Director of the RCRH. His research focuses on improving clinical infertility treatment, perinatal and adult health and reproductive technologies for animal biotechnology.

Prof Sarah Robertson graduated from The University of Adelaide with a PhD in science and now heads the reproductive immunology research group in the Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Her research seeks to unravel the immune and cytokine networks of early pregnancy and to understand the mechanisms underpinning maternal immune tolerance to pregnancy.

Research Centre for Early Origins of Health and Disease

 Director:
Professor Julie Owens
Co-Director:
Associate Professor Michael Davies

Professor Julie Owens started with the University of Adelaide in 1987 as a research fellow in the Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and has since held numerous positions including Head of Discipline of Physiology and Head of School of Paediatrics and Reproductive Health. Her research seeks to increase fundamental knowledge about early growth and development and how it is altered in major disease states, especially fetal growth restriction.

A/Prof Michael Davies is a senior research fellow and epidemiologist in the Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Adelaide. His research is focused on understanding the long-term consequences of social and environmental factors which impact on fetal growth and development, and can therefore, inform subsequent basic research and contribute to public health policy.

Dr Ridding obtained his PhD (Neuroscience) from the University of London and currently holds a NHMRC Senior Research Fellowship. His research program investigates the ability of the motor areas of the brain to reorganise (during learning or following injury). In particular he is interested in the influence of intrauterine stress on the capacity for neuroplasticity later in life as well as the induction of functionally beneficial plasticity in neurologically impaired patients.

 Centre for Stem Cell Research

 Directors:
Associate Professor Mark Nottle
Associate Professor Stan Gronthos

After obtaining his PhD from the University of Adelaide, A/Prof Mark Nottle became General Manager of the Reproductive Biotechnology Division at BresaGen Limited. He has since returned to the University's School of Paediatrics and Reproductive Health where his current research focuses on developing organ, tissue and cell replacement therapies with a particular interest in isolating animal adult and embryonic and stem cells.

A/Prof Stan Gronthos returned to Adelaide in 2002 where he founded the Mesenchymal Stem Cell Group and was later appointed Head of the Regenerative Medicine Program within the Division of Haematology, IMVS. His research program focuses on identification, purification and characterization of mesenchymal stem cells from bone marrow, adipose and dental tissues and has led to commercialization of the intellectual property for different regenerative medicine applications.
