Jenna Paterson

• Adelaide Undergraduate Scholarship

My name is Jenna Paterson and I am 18 years old and currently in first-year medicine at the University of Adelaide.

My younger years were spent in Port Adelaide but I also spent much of my childhood in Angaston in the Barossa Valley because both my parents worked full time and so school holidays were often spent with cousins. I attended high school in Adelaide and enjoyed a wide range of both social and academic activities, and also volunteered with various organisations in the community.

Whilst at school I was encouraged to consider a range of career options, and after a lot of consideration (and many schoolyard conversations) I decided to apply for medicine after completing my SACE in 2006. I was particularly inspired to do medicine as I have spent a lot of time in hospitals undergoing multiple craniofacial surgeries for a cleft lip and palate throughout my schooling life, and through this I have met many wonderful and inspiring health care practitioners. Both my parents with in the health care system also, and their obvious passion and dedication for their work has no doubt been passed onto me as I discovered in the last few years my own delight in the biology and chemistry of life, and have so far enjoyed my medicine course immensely.

Receiving the Adelaide Undergraduate Scholarship this year has meant that I have more time to devote to my studies, and to other activities such as continuing my volunteer work, and have recently been inspired to start playing the guitar.
