Department for Education and Child Development Aboriginal Teaching Scholarships

Aboriginal teaching scholarships:

  • support Aboriginal people undertaking study in a teacher education program
  • guarantee permanent employment in a South Australian government school or pre-school in a country or metropolitan region upon successful completion of all scholarship requirements
  • provide $10,000 financial assistance.

Eligible candidates must be of Aboriginal descent in one of the following groups:

  • a Year 12 student, Aboriginal Community Education Officer (formerly Aboriginal Education Worker) or mature age student intending to undertake further study in a teacher education program
  • a pre-service student currently undertaking a full-time teacher education program
  • graduates from non teaching backgrounds, career change professionals, para-professionals or tradespersons currently undertaking, or intending to undertake, a full-time post graduate teacher education program.

Priority will be given to candidates indicating they will be qualified to teach:

  • any level of schooling from pre-school through to senior secondary
  • any secondary specialist subject area with the exception of Art.

Scholarship conditions require successful candidates to:

  • enter into a contractual agreement with the department
  • successfully complete their teacher education program in the required time
  • commence teaching full-time in a South Australian government school or pre-school the year following completion of their teacher education program.

Scholarship payments may be used at the discretion of the recipient. Recipients who do not fulfil the terms of the scholarship agreement will be required to refund money received.

Verification of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage is required with all applications. The verification is a document executed by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander organisation confirming that the applicant is recognised by his/her community as an Aboriginal person or Torres Strait Islander.
