The University of Adelaide Drought Affected Area School Scholarships 2009

The University invites School Principals from schools in drought affected areas in South Australia to nominate candidates for the University of Adelaide Drought Affected Area School Scholarships. These scholarships are provided to assist students whose families have been financially affected by the drought.  The scholarships will provide an allowance of $5,000 to assist with education/living costs for the first year of the student’s study at the University of Adelaide.

To be eligible for nomination students must:

  • Be Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia
  • Qualify for their year 12 certificate at a nominated school in 2008
  • Have applied through SATAC for admission to a Commonwealth Supported Place in an undergraduate Bachelor’s degree program at the University of Adelaide in 2009 and be eligible to receive an offer of a place in that program
  • Be commencing post secondary studies for the first time in 2009
  • Obtain a Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) of 75 or greater, after the addition of the University’s Fairway Bonus (if applicable)
  • Be from a family that has suffered financially from the drought

School Principals will be invited to nominate up to two candidates for the Drought Affected Area School Scholarships, having regard to the eligibility criteria outlined above.  Only one candidate per school will be awarded a scholarship.  In the event that the first nominee is ineligible to receive an offer of a place, fails to obtain a TER of 75 or greater, or does not enrol in 2009 then the second nominee will be offered the scholarship.  If both the candidates nominated from an individual school are ineligible, the University reserves the right not to award a Drought Affected Area School Scholarship for that school.  The offer of a scholarship may not be deferred.  However, if the University considers that there are exceptional circumstances that prevent the first eligible candidate from enrolling in 2009 then the University may permit the candidate to defer their scholarship for no more than one year.  If approval is given to an eligible candidate to defer their scholarship then no additional award will be made to that school in 2009.

Nominations must be received no later than Friday 28 November 2008.  Late nominations will not be accepted.

The award of a scholarship is subject to the student’s admission to an undergraduate Bachelor’s program and confirmation of full time enrolment at each of the census dates (31 March and 31 August).  The scholarship will be payable in two equal instalments of $2,500 subject to confirmation of continuing eligibility at each of the census dates in 2009 and satisfactory academic progress in their studies. Students must obtain a Grade Point Average of at least 4.0 at the end of first semester 2009 in order to receive the second scholarship instalment.

Students will be eligible to hold both a University of Adelaide Drought Affected Area School Scholarship with a South Australian Merit Scholarship, an Adelaide Undergraduate Scholarship, an Andy Thomas Scholarship, a University of Adelaide Principals Scholarship or a Commonwealth Accommodation Costs Scholarship in 2009.
