eResearch SA Summer Scholarships

eResearch SA is offering up to 10 summer scholarships for students to undertake eResearch projects that utilise advanced information and communication technologies (ICTs) to support research. More information about eResearch SA can be found at the eResearch website.

Scholarships are available for a period of up to 8 weeks during the summer vacation (November–February) and come with a tax-free stipend of $250 per week.

Students will receive training in eResearch technologies and work on a project that relates to any aspect of eResearch SA's activities or services in:

• research collaboration
• data management and sharing
• high performance computing
• visualisation and haptics

Projects may be undertaken in any discipline and will be supervised by University academics with assistance from eResearch SA staff. Students will be matched to an appropriate project, and may indicate particular areas of interest or experience in their application. Students can also suggest project topics and supervisors in their application, if they have agreement from the proposed supervisor.

Example project areas include:

• Exploring the application of eResearch software, tools or services to a particular research problem or project;
• Collaborative web and video conferencing environments for research groups;
• Developing digital repositories for sharing and management of large data sets;
• Development of databases and/or web interfaces for querying databases;
• Developing software to convert data or metadata to standard formats;
• Visualisations of data sets or objects, including 3D visualisation;
• Programming and software development, e.g. for simulation, modelling or data processing and analysis.

Students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Some scholarships will be targeted to projects in the Arts, Humanities or Social Sciences.

Applicants should be students from one of the public South Australian universities who are currently enrolled in at least their second year of study, and have a strong academic record. Students awarded a scholarship will be expected to produce a short written report at the end of the scholarship period.

If you have any questions about the eResearch SA summer scholarship programme, please email scholarships@ersa.edu.au.

Applications close Friday 9th October 2009.
