The Future Students eNews

October 2012

Welcome

Welcome to the latest edition of the Future Students eNews.  We hope you've had a terrific break and are ready to take on Term 4.  We are pleased to present a number of opportunities for you and your students to get involved with the University of Adelaide over the coming months and you can find more information about each of these below.

Events Calendar

The Office for Future Students actively participates in various on and off campus events including:

Aim for Adelaide - 1 & 2 November 2012

An experiential day of varied interactive activities and study skills workshops for all Year 9 and 10 students at Fairway Schools and Fairway Equity Scheme students.  The program includes a university style lecture in one of our largest lecture theatres and will then offer students a chance to sample two ‘hands on’ activities in their school groups - one before and one after lunch. The activities will cover the diverse range of study options available at the University of Adelaide.

Registrations are now open with more information available from our website.

Change of Preference Info Night - 3 January 2013

Provides an opportunity for all Year 12 students and their parents to ask questions and talk one-on-one with University advisers about programs and pathways in order to “lock in” their preferences.  Students can also discover the options and alternatives available to them if they miss out on their preferences and learn more about offer rounds, accepting offers, enrolling in and starting at University.  Further information will be available in late October.

For a full list of our events or where to find us, please visit our Events Calendar.

Adjusted ATAR

When Year 12 students receive their Year 12 results and Tertiary Entrance Statement, please encourage students to confirm their University of Adelaide adjusted ATAR by contacting the University Contact Centre on 08 8313 5208 or 1800 061 456.

If students applied for programs with Adelaide Approved and achieved equal or higher than Adelaide Approved Score, by listing that program as first preference (and meeting any pre-requisites) means they will receive an offer for that program in the January main offer round.

If students did not apply for programs with Adelaide Approved, they will still receive an offer in the main offer rounds according to the competitive process.

Remember we are here to help, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

*Please note the University is closed from 5pm Friday 21 December 2012 and reopen from 8:45am Wednesday 2 January 2013.

Give Your Students a Headstart

Headstart Scholarship Program:  Computer Science and Philosophy subjects now available
An exciting addition to our suite of Headstart subjects are 4 first year Philosophy and 2 first year Computer Science courses.

Headstart Accelerated
Open to students who have completed a Stage 2 subject in an earlier school year and have less than a full year’s workload.  It provides gifted and highly motivated students a challenge beyond the Year 12 curriculum.  Eligibility is based on Yr 12 subjects already completed.

Headstart Studies
Students may now complete a university subject as part of their SACE and have it count it towards their ATAR.  Under the Headstart Studies Scholarship Program, high achieving Year 12 students may apply for Headstart subjects which have no Year 12 subject prerequisites.  Eligibility is based on grades from subjects completed in Year 11.

Any student applying to the Headstart Scholarship Program must be recommended by their school and have the support of their parents.  Students must be academically able to cope in a fully adult learning environment as they will attend classes on campus, complete assignments and sit examinations the same as university degree students.

Applications
The closing date for 2013 entry is Monday 11 February 2013.

Full details are available from our website or contact Angela Ballantyne on 8313 8381 or via email.

Journalism Specialisation New in 2013

From 2013, The University of Adelaide’s Bachelor of Media students will now be able to specialise in Journalism as a part of their degree. This program has been developed in collaboration with major media and journalism industry organisations to deliver a study experience that is unique in Australia along with opportunities for learning from respected journalists.

The Bachelor of Media with a Journalism specialisation will provide students with the practical skills required to work in an environment that is rapidly changing. Students will not only learn how to write effective news stories, but also the growing range of media platforms for the presentation of stories, including video, websites and social media. Graduates of this degree will also understand how to integrate a wider range of voices in their writing and reporting which is required due to the rapid growth in social media and user-generated content.

Other specialisations on offer within the Bachelor of Media include Marketing and Media Production streams: Computer Game Art, Digital Production, Graphic Design, Photographic Imaging or Computer Graphic Imaging and Visual Effects.

For more information including an outline of each specialisation, please visit our Degree Finder. Alternatively, contact Kelly Golding from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences via email.

Certificate II in Radio at PBA-FM, Salisbury

‘Monday Madness’, the weekly hour-long show that students of our Certificate II have been producing as part of their assessment, has been going from strength to strength. The program combines music with lively panel sessions and interviews with representatives of the community that have recently included a Uniting Church Minister from St. Stephen’s at Elizabeth North, the organisers of the recent Peachey Road commemorative event and a Professional Wrestling Promoter!

Monday Madness will broadcast from 6-7 pm each Monday night on PBA-FM, 89.7 FM, and simultaneously online until the end of the school year. The Faculty is delivering the Certificate II in Radio Production at PBA-FM at Salisbury to selected students, including a number of Year 10 and 11 students, free of charge under the Skills for All arrangement. The course will be delivered again in 2013 in Terms 2, 3 and 4, with weekly sessions running from 4-7pm on a Monday evening. Salisbury Writers’ Festival
John Harvey Gallery, Salisbury

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences was involved in this wonderful recent event, which ran from the 24 August to 2nd September, in a number of exciting ways. The opening night of the Festival provided us with the opportunity to present awards to the winners of a Write Now Competition for High School aged writers and artists who live, study, volunteer or work in the City of Salisbury.

We also launched the Write Now Anthology, a collection featuring the winners and commended entrants from last year’s competition. The anthology was designed by competition winner Samantha Pinnington of Parafield Gardens High School and launched by Dr. Dylan Coleman, author of the award-winning novel Mazin Grace and lecturer at the University of Adelaide, who gave a memorable and deeply moving speech about her own development as an author that excited and inspired the gathered crowd of aspiring novelists. The Anthology can be read, and the winners of this year’s Write Now competition viewed at our website.

The Faculty also coordinated a Development Session for High School students, ‘Writing Your Own Future’, on the 30th August.  This proved to be very popular, with nearly 50 students from local High Schools in attendance. The Faculty plans to continue to work with the City of Salisbury in 2013 to deliver further exciting writing opportunities to students in the North.  Please watch this space for further details or contact Steph Hester on 8313 0303 or via email.

Faculty of the Professions

Professional Experience in Peru

A group of ten pre-service teachers from the School of Education has spent five weeks this semester on placement in Cusco, Peru.

While fulfilling the requirements for their final professional experience for teacher registration, the students have enjoyed immersing themselves in the Peruvian culture and - when not engaged in actual classroom teaching - working on a construction project to benefit the local community.  They also found some time to enjoy some memorable weekend activities such as paragliding and visiting the Incan ruins at nearby Machu Picchu.

The placement experience was organised in conjunction with Antipodeans Abroad, who conducted a series of pre-placement workshops and arranged homestay accommodation for the students. A University lecturer accompanied the group. Financial assistance was provided by a Federal Government grant under the University’s Study Overseas Short Term Mobility Program. Please click here to view the blog updates which gave a lively summary of the happenings in Peru.

Student Ambassador Program

The Faculty of the Professions Student Ambassador Program has been developed to create a network of undergraduate students enrolled in Business, Economics and Law, and provide them with unique opportunities to enhance and enrich their time at University.

Student ambassadors act as the Faculty's voice and through the program are exposed to numerous opportunities available exclusively to these students. These opportunities range from volunteering in the community, international internship and study trips, industry networking events, social activities, student societies, and engagement with other students with similar career goals and aspirations. The program aims to create a sense of community, and focuses on students' University experience outside of their academic studies.

The feedback from students has been extremely positive:

“The program provides the tools for myself and other students to develop as well rounded community members…the opportunities have enabled the development of professional relationships and business networks”

- Alexandra Grigg, 3rd Year Bachelor of Economics and Finance.

To learn more about the program, our Ambassadors themselves, their success stories and how they get involved in the community, please click here.  For further information, please visit our website.

Adelaide PARK(ing) Day 2012
3rd year Design Studies students took out the President’s Choice award

Friday, 21st of September was Adelaide’s Parking Day when a team of Adelaide University 3rd year Design Studies students took out the President’s award, beating all other entries including many of Adelaide’s top architecture firms. This is a remarkable achievement, and goes to show that our students can compete on a design level with those in the profession.

“f(o.r.m); a module that the team created as a means for the target audience to create and define their own spaces that could ultimately be inhabited as they see fit. Each individual component is recycled cardboard boxes that were discarded or perceived as a ‘waste’ product by their owner. Our goal is to give a sense of purpose and initiate another stage within the cardboard box’s functionality which we intend to use as a device to connect to a wider range of audiences. f(o.r.m) is an installation built by the community, for the community and provides a large pool of ideas. Therefore, the possibilities of the design changing and altering in structure are endless”.

A video of ABC’s news coverage of the event can be found here, with f (o.r.m) the first park shown. The time-lapse video can also be viewed here.
