Examples of Situational Learning in Practice

Mekong eSim

The Mekong eSim is a creative, web based role play  set in the Mekong region of South East Asia. It operates as part of the Environmental Engineering II Course in the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences and other faculties are also welcome to be involved.

In addition to learning technical skills, participants find that the eSim provides an excellent environment for learning generic skills such as problem solving, communication, cultural awareness and working in a group.

Disaster Down Under

The Disaster Down Under eSim uses a scenario based approach and was developed by the Discipline of Nursing following the Bali bombings of 2002.  It seeks to inform participants of the issues faced in a diaster situation involving multiple burn casualties and attempts to involve students in the hypothetical management of these casualties.

Play By The Rules – Pregnancy in Sport

The Pregnancy in Sport learning module was developed for Play By The Rules to showcase a scenario based approach to dealing with pregnancy in sport. This module incorporates multimedia content and printable resources to complement the scenario storyboard and has been published using flash technology.

White Lesions

White Lesions was developed by Dental Lecturer Dr Richard Logan over two days using a PowerPoint template.  The finished product was then converted to a Flash object using software called Articulate. This reduces the file size considerably for easy uploading into MyUni.

Access White Lesions, templates and other examples developed by staff by going to the SCoPE website

Role Play Examples

The Learning Designs website has a range of online role play examples from Business and Law, Environmental Engineering, History and Politics.
