Poulomee was born in the year 1980. She graduated from Loreto College, India and received a gold medal in the year 2002 for topping the entire college. Soon after she completed her Master of Arts in the year 2004 and secured the fourth position at the University of Calcutta, India. She is passionate about teaching and has worked in numerous schools and colleges. She had the opportunity to work on several research projects involving children and adolescents with disabilities, during the tenure of her Master of Philosophy. It was this close and long association with them that helped her analyse, reflect and ponder on many of their problems. This resulted in a longing desire in her heart to not only work in this field but also to strive to make the world into a more ‘Inclusive Society’. Currently, she is a research scholar at the University of Adelaide, School of Education awarded with the prestigious ‘Adelaide Scholarship International’.

Topic Title

Insights into Self Concept and Test Anxiety: Adolescents and Young Adults with either Vision Impairment or Intellectual Disability in South Australia

Abstract 1

The project aims to explore the self concept and test anxiety of adolescents and young adults who are either vision impaired or intellectually disabled in South Australia. The investigation of the two participant groups in relation to self concept and test anxiety will establish the nature and degree of self concept and test anxiety as measured with each of the groups of participants, determine whether or not either gender or setting have an impact on self concept and test anxiety, and ascertain if there are differences between adolescents and young adults with either vision impairment or intellectual disabilities in these areas. It also aims to provide insights into the reasons for low and high self concept and high and low test anxiety of any individual under study and compile information for professionals about ways to improve self concept and reduce test anxiety in students with vision impairment or students with intellectual disability. This project will further help to identify whether the transitional educational arrangements and support to further education available to the special and regular schools in South Australia contribute to building the self concept and reducing the test anxiety of the adolescents and adults with either vision impairment or intellectual disability. It is not aimed to compare the findings in relation to these two groups of adolescents and adults, but rather to examine them separately with a view to informing professionals and adding to the body of knowledge on these areas in relation to either students with vision impairment or students with intellectual disability.
