| TOC | Biography/Background [top]Simon was born in the northern part of Norway (almost spot on the arctic circle) in 1978. Having always been interested in computers, he moved to Adelaide (Australia) in 1999 to study them in more detail. A couple of degrees and a few years of full-time work later, Simon is still in Australia - now pursuing a PhD at the University of Adelaide. | Thesis Topic and Abstract [top]Topic Title "Virtual Classroom Simulation" [VCS]Abstract 1 When starting their teacher education, prospective teachers have already formed preconceived ideas, or mental models, about teaching and learning based on their own experiences as learners. These mental models are more likely to be influenced and re-shaped by hands-on experience (i.e. practice teaching) rather than theoretical components in the teaching course. However, with a current drought in practice teaching placements, a number of preservice teachers may miss out on this practical experience. The VCS research study aims to identify and reconstruct important attributes from a teaching/learning context (i.e. the classroom) into a virtual environment; a real-time interactive computer simulation training tool. The simulation will be an important instrument in adjusting and complicating preservice teachers’ mental models about pedagogical content knowledge, in particular with regards to the very fundamentals of teacher/student interaction. 1 Skrødal, S.
