Who Can Apply?

SmoothStart has been designed to support students who are facing the extra challenge of transitioning from country and interstate high schools to university. For example, leaving family and friends, organising new accommodation and meeting a whole new group of people are extra stresses facing rural and interstate students. In addition, students also have to cope with starting at uni and adjusting to a different style of study.

SmoothStart is also designed to support metropolitan students who are coming from schools where not many of their school friends will be moving on to university.  Like their rural and interstate peers, they won't see many familiar faces in the crowd.

If you are a recent school leaver and can answer 'YES' to one or more of the following questions, then you are eligible to join:

  • Did you attend a rural or interstate school in the past two years?
  • Did you attend a school where, as far as you know, few students are intending to study at the University of Adelaide?
  • Are you a first-year Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student?
  • Will you be receiving a Youth Allowance Payment whilst studying at university?

If you are intending to live in University accommodation or a Residential College you may find that there are in-built supports similar to those offered by SmoothStart. However, if you wish to ensure personal support and are eligible according to the above criteria, feel free to register for SmoothStart.

If you have any questions regarding your eligibility to join SmoothStart please email us. SmoothStartWilto Yerlo
