News & Events2009 Australian University GamesSince its inception in 1993, the Australian University Games (AUG) has grown to be Australia's largest annual multi-sport event. Held each September/October, the Games is renowned for providing a friendly but competitive environment for Australian university athletes and is the flagship event on the national university sporting calendar. The Games are recognised as a perfect opportunity to provide university athletes, many of whom are of Olympic standard, to compete against each other in a national multi-sport event. As such, the Games has built up a reputation as a not-to-be-missed event, attracting over 6,000 participants each year. Off the sporting field, an action-packed, week-long social program is conducted to complement the sporting activities and enhance the event experience for participants. Each year the Games sporting schedule is made up of more than 28 individual and team sports. Unlike previous years where competitors were required to qualify for the national event through regional Games, the event is now open to all competitors and has separate competitive and social divisions. The 2009 Australian University Games will be held from 27 September - 2 October with 28 sports contested. Participants will compete in: Athletics, Australian Rules Football, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Cycling, Fencing, Football, Golf, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Kendo, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rugby Union 7's, Softball, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Tenpin Bowling, Touch, Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball and Water Polo.
