The Centre’s key participants currently supervise 18 Honours students and 70 PhD candidates.  Our graduates are in high demand in the private biotechnology sector, as well as research centres both in Australia and overseas.

Why study stem cells?

Stem cells are one of the most exciting and fastest growing areas of research. The reason for their great interest is that they have the potential to give rise to all different cell types in the body such as heart, lungs and bone, providing great possibilities in the areas of reparative and regenerative medicine.

What projects are available?

Annually, a guide to the Honours and PhD projects available is published by the Centre.  Other projects may be available by negotiation with the potential Supervisor. Please read the information about our research areas, and contact the appropriate group leader for further information.  Alternatively, please contact the Manager for any general enquiries.

What are the Honours program entry requirements, and how do I apply?

Entry requirements
Students from all Universities, that hold a science degree [BSc, BBiotech, BHealthSci, BVetSci etc.] or a medical degree [MBBS] with a grade average of a Credit level or above in appropriate 3rd year level subjects are eligible to apply.  Graduates of other degrees may be eligible based on the type of project involved [eg. BMath(statistics)].  Students can enrol through both the Faculties of Science and Health Science.

How to apply
After deciding on a project and contacting the Supervisor, students should complete an application form

What are the Postgraduate (PhD/Masters) program entry requirements, and how do I apply?

Entry requirements
Students typically hold a either a IA or IIA Honours degree in sciences [BSc(Hons), BBiotech(Hons), BHealthSci(Hons), BVetSci(Hons) etc.] or a medical degree [MBBS(Hons)] to qualify for the PhD program.

How to apply
Once a student has found an appropriate project and Supervisor(s), they together prepare a project outline for a scholarship application (submitted in September/October).

I'm a 2nd or 3rd year undergraduate. Can I gain some work experience at the Centre?

The Centre for Stem Cell Research,The Discipline of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Faculty of Health Sciences  offer Summer Scholarships to undergraduate students at the end of their 2nd or 3rd year of a science degree [BSc, BBiotech, BHealthSci, BVetSci etc.] or a medical degree [MBBS]. These projects are typically carried out during the summer vacation but can be undertaken at other times with the approval of the relevant Academic Head of School.
