Year 12 Applicants
To satisfy minimum entry requirements for admission to undergraduate programs, applicants with year 12 qualifications need to:
- qualify for the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE), the International Baccalaureate, or a recognised interstate/overseas equivalent;
- complete at least 80 credits of study at Stage 2, of which 60 credits of study must be 20 credit Tertiary Admissions Subjects (TAS) from a maximum of three attempts which need not be in consecutive year.
Selection into undergraduate programs is competitive as the number of applicants generally exceeds the number of places available, i.e. the quota for each program. Therefore applicants are encouraged to make full use of preferences to enhance their opportunity of receiving an offer.
School-leaver applicants are given an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR), based on their SACE results. School-leavers with interstate/overseas equivalents and applicants studying the International Baccalaureate (IB) have their final school results converted to an ATAR by SATAC. Equivalences for Queensland year 12 and IB results are included in the university's Undergraduate Prospectus and the SATAC Uni Guide.
When a school-leaver applies for entry to a program that uses the ATAR as an entry criterion, a check is first made that the applicant has met the entry requirements for the program, e.g. program pre-requisites. All eligible applicants are then ranked in order of their ATAR and offers are made on the basis of academic merit until the quota for the program is filled. The score of the last applicant to gain entry to the program is called the 'cut-off' score. To give applicants an indication of the competitiveness of entry to various programs, cut-off scores for the previous year are published in the Undergraduate Prospectus and the SATAC Uni Guide.
Cut-off scores do vary from year to year due to changes in course quotas and/or applicant demand. Whilst you may consider cut-offs in listing your preferences when you apply through SATAC, please do base your preferences on your preferred programs and not simply the previous year's entry scores.
Tertiary Admission Subjects (TAS)
A TAS is a SACE Stage 2 subject which has been approved as acceptable for university admission purposes. The University requires students to study a minimum number of credits of TAS to be eligible to receive an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).
Bonus Points Scheme
The University of Adelaide operates the Bonus Points Scheme, designed to highlight the importance of study in mathematics and languages at a higher level. This is in line with government and industry policies promoting: the development of Australia's international capabilities in science and technology; commercial and political links with major trading partners; an internationally competitive labour force; and cultural pluralism within Australia.
For the purposes of admission, bonus points are automatically added to the university aggregate of applicants who have successfully completed Specialist Mathematics and/or a language other than English (LOTE) subject at SACE Stage 2 level, or equivalent. The LOTE can be any language other than English, regardless of whether it is taken at Beginners, Continuers or background Speakers level. Please note that English as a Second Language is not a LOTE.
The Bonus Points Scheme offers up to four bonus points each for Specialist Mathematics and/or a LOTE subject, depending on performance. Two bonus points will be given for a C grade (C-, C or C+), three bonus points for a B grade (B-, B or B+), and four bonus points for an A grade (A-, A or A+). Applicants with the International Baccalaureate (IB) or the interstate equivalent of the SACE are eligible if they have successfully completed equivalent subjects.
The Bonus Points Scheme applies to eligible local applicants, and international applicants who have completed their year 12 qualification on-shore. Please note that applicants can receive bonus points under both the Specialist Mathematics/LOTE bonus points scheme and the Fairway Access and Equity Scheme (see below) to a maximum of nine points.
Please note that selection for the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery program will no longer include bonus points for Specialist Mathematics/LOTE, however selection will still include Fairway bonus points (see below).
Fairway Access Scheme / Fairway Equity Scheme
Fairway Access Scheme
Australian schools whose students are under-represented at university are eligible to receive bonus points under the Fairway Access Scheme. This scheme allows students greater access to the University of Adelaide. Metropolitan Adelaide Fairway Access schools are determined by the participation rate of their students in South Australian universities.
For all other schools across Australia, please refer to the Remoteness Area (RA) Locator site, handled by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aging (DHA) . If a school falls within a postcode that is classified by the DHA as anything other than a ‘Major City’ (e.g. ‘Remote Australia’, ‘Outer Regional Australia’, etc.), then it is a Fairway Access Scheme School. To find out if your school is a Fairway Access Scheme School, search for the school's postcode on this online map.
Applicants under the Fairway Access Scheme have bonus points automatically added to their university aggregate (as reported on the SSABSA certificate) which in turn creates a new tertiary admssions rank, a University of Adelaide entrance rank, which is used as the basis of their application to programs at the University of Adelaide only. Students do not need to apply to be considered under the Fairway Access Scheme as eligible applicants are automatically identified through the SATAC system.
Fairway Equity Scheme
Students from South Australian non-Fairway Access Scheme Schools, who hold a School Card, or who are in receipt of Youth Allowance, and who are applying to study at the University of Adelaide, will be eligible to receive bonus points under the Fairway Equity Scheme. Students will be required to fill in an individual application form and either post the form directly to the Admissions Office (address on the form) or submit the form in person to Information Services, Level 4, Hub Central no later than Friday 2 December 2011. Once applications have been assessed, the University will send a list of those who meet the criteria to SATAC for bonus point allocation.
Applicants under the Fairway Equity Scheme have six bonus points added to their university aggregate (as reported on the SSABSA certificate) which in turn creates a new tertiary admissions rank, a University of Adelaide entrance rank which is used as the basis of their application to programs at the University of Adelaide only. *Note, International Baccalaureate (IB) students are also eligible under this scheme.

Once all bonus points (Fairway Access Scheme or Fairway Equity Scheme) have been added, applicants will compete for selection to all University of Adelaide programs, on the basis of their new University of Adelaide entrance rank.
To find out your adjusted University of Adelaide entrance rank, please contact the Student Centre on 08 8303 5208 (via telephone only) after you have received your SSABSA or IB certificate.
The Fairway Scheme (Access and Equity) does not alter the standard entry requirements for all University of Adelaide programs. All applicants must still satisfy the published entry requirements to be eligible for selection.
The Fairway Scheme (Access and Equity) applies to local and eligible international applicants who have completed their year 12 qualification on-shore.
*Please note: Students who are attending a Fairway Access Scheme school which is in transition and receiving three bonus points, may also apply via the Fairway Equity Scheme to top up their bonus points to the maximum of six bonus points.
