Event News: Career Development Week 2012
Every year Career Development Week is a highlight on the Careers Service calendar and 2012 was no exception. Each day was action packed with industry panellists giving first-hand insights into their industries. Monday's topic was 'professional communication' in which three experts with HR and recruitment backgrounds gave their take on interview skills, tips and blunders.
Tuesday saw the Careers Service, AUU Employment Service and ATA team up together to present a beginners workshop on job hunting via social media and Wednesday continued the theme with another industry panel leading students through the best and worst of their experiences in business networking. Students were given the chance to practice networking with staff and other students. The evening session focused on SA Health's new e-Recruitment system.
Thursday focused on international internship experiences and the transition from university to the workplace with current student and graduate speakers. The event overall provided valuable insights for students from all of our panellists and speakers. As for the Careers Service, we are delighted to see hundreds of students focusing on their career development!

Event News: International Careers Evening 2011
Finding a job can be a daunting and sometimes frustrating experience for all graduates... especially when you're searching for opportunities overseas or if you are an international student seeking work in Australia. International Careers Evening 2011 once again played host to 140 students and featured the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) who explained many elements of finding the correct visa for professional work in Australia.
Industry representatives from Australian Internships, Ernst & Young and Santos spoke with students about the different opportunities available for domestic students on secondments throughout the world, internships both in Australia and abroad and the recruitment process for international students.
Winning positions with two major companies (KPMG and Microsoft), student speakers Melissa and Barnam said that employers were more interested with their extra curricular activities, enthusiasm and communication skills rather than their grades. Both students found that success didn't come quickly and Melissa laughed as she said that the rejection letters came faster than the acceptances! For both Barnam and Melissa, the recruitment process involved lots of different processes such as online applications, phone interviews and assessment centres. Melissa said that the more you go through the job hunting process, the more you realise that an employer is looking for the right kind of person to join their team; a person who fits in with the other people in their company and their style of business. Melissa finished with encouragement for all students and job seekers to keep moving forward in the job hunt in a positive way.
