“Play Games & Earn Cash”
Lecturers from the School of Economics invite you to join their new round of the “Play Games & Earn Cash” program. All you need to do is to play a computer-based experiment and you will earn real cash immediately. Students on average can expect to earn $15 per hour, paid in cash at the time of the experiment.

Honours Programme 2007 - Discipline of Medicine, University of Adelaide
An information session will be held on Tuesday, 10 October 2006 from 4.00-5.00 pm in the Discipline of Medicine Conference Room, Level 6, Eleanor Harrald Building, Royal Adelaide Hospital. Prospective students are encouraged to attend this event, which will provide more detail about the course. Prospective supervisors are also encouraged to attend, and light refreshments will be provided.

Survey of Gambling Venue Staff: Participants Invited
Current managers and staff at gambling venues are invited to participate in a study of gambling behaviour being conducted in the School of Psychology, University of Adelaide. The study involves filling in a short survey about your experiences working in or managing a gambling venue. The survey takes 15-20 minutes to complete and can be mailed to you. All respondents receive a $25 Coles-Myer voucher for their time and effort and to cover the cost of their phone call to the researchers.

Volunteers must be:

  • Aged 18 years or older
  • Have worked in a gambling venue during the last 3 months and had contact with gamblers

Make Easy Money - Psychology Study

Males between the ages of 16 and 20 are invited to participate in a study of decision-making strategies currently underway within the School of Psychology. Participants are required to undertake three computerised tasks which should take about a total of 30 minutes. You will be paid $10 cash and go into a draw for an iPOD Shuffle for your time and effort. Participants do not have to be university students so you can bring along friends or family that meet the criteria (we are limited to three participants at a time). Although you are welcome to call in without an appointment on the off chance there is a space available, you are encouraged to make an appointment by texting or calling Peter on 0408 208 207 or emailing peter.chamberlain@student.adelaide.edu.au.

The study is being conducted in Room 259b (level 2) of the Hughes Building, just follow the signs - see you there!

Have you ever wondered how smart you really are? Find out for free!

You can find out exactly how your cognitive abilities compare to the general population for free, simply by completing two short tests as part of a study being conducted in the University of Adelaide School of Psychology. The tests will cover your verbal reasoning, your numerical ability, and your abstract reasoning. The tests should take less than 1 hour to complete and are run at the following times:

Friday August 25: 12pm, 2pm, and 4pm.
Friday September 1: 12pm, 3.30pm, and 5pm

Free Tax Help On Campus

The Australian Tax Office volunteer service will be provided on campus form August to the end of October.

Students with incomes under $35,000 who would like help preparing their personal tax returns can make an appointment by ringing AUU Reception on 8303 5401 or calling in at the AUU Reception.

The service does not include trust or business returns.

The Volunteers are trained by the ATO and the service is facilitated by the AUU and the University.

Australian University Games

The University of Adelaide, Flinders University and the University of SA are jointly hosting the 2006 Australian University Games. They will be held in Adelaide from Sunday 24th - Friday 29th September. Over 5,000 students from across Australia are expected to compete.

All student of the University of Adelaide are eligible (and encouraged) to enter into a variety of Team and Individual Sports.

Costs involved will be $145/person/event entered. Competition entry closes on 25th August.

If you are a first year student and want to be better prepared for your exams then check out the first-year students web site. This contains information about upcoming exam workshops, the Maths Drop in Centre, and how to manage exam stress.

There is still time to develop successful strategies to help you get through your first year at University –make the time to start now!

Peer Advice Drop-in Session
A Peer Advice Drop-in session for First Years will be offered on Tuesday 28 March in the Margaret Murray Room, level 4, Union House between 12:00 – 2:00 pm. Talk to senior students from your Faculty or School for an experienced student’s perspective on Uni life, including:

  • Assessment and study
  • What to expect from your program in later years
  • Who to go to for help and advice

Light refreshments will be served, and students will go into a draw to win a Unibooks voucher.

If you would like to speak to a Peer Advisor but cannot make it on the day, please email karen.steinwedel@adelaide.edu.au and you will be contacted by an Advisor before Friday 31 March.

Career and Study Planning Workshop
A Career and Study Planning workshop will be offered on Wednesday 29 March (1:30 pm – 2:30 pm), and repeated on Thursday 30 March (11:30 am – 12:30 pm) in Napier LG 29. These workshops will focus on identifying your skills, influences and career plans, and the competitive nature of the workforce. Learn what skills employers are looking for, and the role your program of study plays in this. First Year students are particularly encouraged to attend these workshops.

Bookings are not necessary for any of these sessions.

Orientation Week
Orientation Week is an important week of activities for both new and continuing students. All students are encouraged to attend their preliminary classes for courses in which they are enrolled, as important information will be provided including course outlines, book lists and methods of assessment. You are also invited to visit The Welcome Centre in Hughes Plaza to sign up for a campus tour, talk to senior students from your faculty or join in a 'Speed Meeting' session to make some new friends.

Israel In Egypt - Student Rush
Following its exciting African-themed concert last Saturday, the Intervarsity Choral Festival choir returns tomorrow (Friday evening) for its second concert, Handel's Israel in Egypt, a magnificent but rarely-performed oratorio telling the story of the Israelites' escape from Egypt.

Renowned Handel expert and Adelaide favourite Graham Abbott conducts the choir, joined by the Adelaide Art Orchestra and soloists Emma Horwood and Greta Bradman (soprano), Sally-Anne Russell (alto), James Pratt (tenor), Alan McKie and David Hayton (Bass).

Israel in Egypt is this Friday, 3 February, 7:30 pm in the Festival Theatre. Tickets from $44 to $58, book through BASS (tel. 131 246).

Student rush tickets $20 available at the door from 6.30pm.

Writing and Speaking Workshop - Learning the do's and don'ts in medical and scientific writing
When: Thursday March 16th
Where: Eleanor Harrald Building, The University of Adelaide, Frome Road, Adelaide.
Cost: $20

This workshop aims to deal with the many questions and issues relating to writing up research, in particular for publication and presenting it to an audience. We feel that such a workshop will be a valuable contribution to your students learning and we have secured some expert speakers that will be able to present their own views and experience on the topics.

The workshop is open to anyone who wishes to attend however the workshop will most likely benefit undergraduate and postgraduate students in the science or medical field. Immobilise your car for $50 (Limited Offer)

The On Dit editors are conducting extensive research to determine On Dit's direction in 2006. Please click on the link below to have your say about content, distribution and format.

Call for International Student Centre Peer Support Mentors
The International Student Centre is looking for friendly, motivated, and creative students to become Peer Support Mentors during the New International Orientation in February 2006.

The dates of the Orientation Program are Monday 6 – Thursday 16 February 2006 (excluding the weekend). Hours will be Monday – Friday 9am - 5pm. Some social activities will be held outside of these hours.
