Appeal submission format

Appeals submissions lodged as part of Stage 3 of the Student Grievance Resolution process must include the completed and signed Student Appeal Application. They must provide sufficient information for the Student Grievance and Appeals Committee, whose members will have no prior involvement or knowledge of the circumstances of the grievance, to gain a clear appreciation of:

  • what the student's grievance or appeal is about
  • what the student seeks by way of resolution or decision in the appeal process
  • the events and decisions leading up to the appeal
  • the people involved in those events and decisions

Without the committee having to seek significant additional supporting materials, documents or background information.

Accordingly, appeal submissions must include all of the following six requirements.

1. A clear statement of the decision or action being appealed against, and the grounds on which re-consideration of the Stage Two decision is sought.

For example

"The Course Coordinator of Wave Patterns 101 and the Head of Oceanography have both refused my request for an independent re-mark of my major essay assignment (see attached emails dated dd/mm/yyyy and dd/mm/yyyy), despite my having provided them with a strong argument and valid reasons for my belief that it deserves a higher mark."

2. A clear statement of what appeal outcome(s) the student seeks or would be satisfied with.

For example

"I am seeking an independent re-mark of my major essay assignment and an apology for the stress caused by the outright refusal of both the Course Coordinator and Head of School to even consider a reasonable and valid re-mark request."

3. Detailed statements on each of the central claims being made by the student.

For example

"When I requested an independent re-mark for my major essay assignment, the Course Coordinator informed me that the original marking process was fair and reasonable and that therefore he was not willing to consider either my request for the re-mark or the reasons I provided.

"Upon requesting a review of the Course Coordinator's decision, the Secretary of Oceanography wrote to me to explain that she had discussed my case with the Head of School. The Head of School's position was that the Course Coordinator was merely following the Discipline's agreed policy on re-marking and she was not willing to consider a review."

4. The names and titles of all staff members or committees involved in the decisions or actions under appeal.

For example

"The Course Coordinator of Wave Patterns 101 at the time was Dr [Given name] [Family name]. The Head of Oceanography is Prof [Given name] [Family name], and the Secretary of Oceanography is Ms [Given name] [Family name]. The Education and Welfare Officer assisting me with this grievance resolution is Mr [Given name] [Family name]."

5. A brief summary of the relevant events leading up to the decisions or actions under appeal.
These should be in chronological order, with references to the relevant supporting documentation provided in the appeal submission.

For example
