Appeal lodgement time frames
The completed appeal submission must be lodged with the Student Policy and Appeals office within 20 business days of:
- the date of receipt of notification of the outcome from Stage 2 – in the case of grievances
- the date of receipt of notification of the penalty – in the case of appeals against the imposition of a penalty under a University statute or rule
The appeal submission will be checked by the Student Policy and Appeals office to ensure it complies with the correct format.
Lodgement out of time
Applying for a time frame waiver
A student may apply to lodge an appeal later than 20 business days after the date of notification of a Stage 2 process outcome or a penalty under a University statute or rule.
The student must:
- prepare the appeal in accord with the correct format
- include a separate statement outlining the reasons for the delay and requesting a waiver of the 20-business-day time frame
Consideration of the waiver
The Convenor of the Student Grievance and Appeals Committee will consider the request for a waiver of the standard time frame and in doing so may consult with:
- other members of the Committee
- other parties to the grievance/appeal
- the Secretary to the Committee
- other appropriate officers of the University
In deciding whether to grant the request for a waiver of the standard time frame the Convenor will consider:
- the reasonableness and adequacy of the explanation for the delay
- whether the delay would lead to unfairness to other parties to the grievance appeal
- whether the delay would prejudice the Committee's ability to provide a fair hearing
If the waiver is granted
If the application for a waiver of the usual lodgement time frame is granted, Student Policy and Appeals office staff must proceed with the application for appeal.
If the waiver is refused
If the request for a waiver of the usual lodgement time frame is refused, Student Policy and Appeals office staff must notify the student within five (5) business days that the appeal will not proceed. Students who are refused may proceed to Stage 4: External review and appeal if they wish to pursue their grievance.
