Getting to University and your transport options

There are three main ways that you can get to Uni:

Public Transport

You may need to get to uni, and other places around Adelaide, by using public transport. There are several types of public transport available in Adelaide, so we've included some general information and useful tips.

Buses and the O-Bahn

  • Bus timetables: Printed timetables can be obtained from Mayo Cafe (near its main entrance) and Adelaide Metro InfoCentre or shopping complexes.  You can also search for an online timetable or download them directly from Adelaide Metro
  • The O-Bahn: An express bus that runs to the north-east of Adelaide.  Adelaide Metro has timetables.
  • Free buses: the 99C (City loop) bus operates around the city 7 days a week for free.  (And don’t forget some trams are free from North Terrace to South Terrace too).
  • Bus stops: in the city, there are different bus stops that cater for different bus routes. Always check that you are waiting at the right bus stops to catch your bus.

Trains

Trains service many suburbs in combination with the Adelaide Metro bus services. The Adelaide Train Station is on North Terrace (about a 10 minute walk from the North Terrace campus) and has services travelling from the City along the Belair, Noarlunga, Outer Harbour and Salisbury. Refer to TransAdelaide for information on public train services.

Trams

The tramline runs between Glenelg and the city centre and takes approximately 35 minutes to get from Glenelg to the city. Adelaide Metro has Glenelg-City tram maps, timetables and fares.

Taxis

You can phone for a taxi, 'flag down' a vacant taxi in the street or collect one from a designated taxi rank in the city. They are a convenient but expensive form of transport – taxi fares are fixed and automatically calculated. To book a taxi call:

  • Yellow Cabs: 132 227
  • Suburban: 131 008
  • Adelaide Independent: 132 211

Inter-campus Shuttle Bus

Roseworthy and Waite students who live near the city, can take advantage of the University-provided inter-campus shuttle bus from North Terrace campus to your suburban campus. The Security Office has timetables for the shuttle.

Personal Transport

If you plan to drive or cycle to uni, you'll need to know where to park your car or store your bicycle. There are a few locations close to North Terrace campus where vehicles can be parked:

  • Frome Road
  • Victoria Drive
  • Kintore Avenue
  • Hackney Road (need to cross the Botanical Gardens to uni)
  • War Memorial Drive
  • MacKinnon Parade (10 mins walk to uni)

(Remember to buy a parking ticket from a parking meter and display it on your dashboard. If you don't, you are most likely to get a fine because parking officers conduct checks frequently.  And, if you’re on a motorbike, park in a motorbike parking bay and you won’t need a parking ticket.)

Disability parking on university campus

Students with a Transport SA disabled parking permit are permitted to park on campus in any white lined parking zone or disabled parking zone. They are also given an extra 90 minutes on top of any parking restrictions when on campus. (e.g. if parked in 30 minute zone, they are entitled to park there for 120 minutes).

Contact a Disability Liaison Officer for more information about disability access to the university.

Bicycles

Bike lanes are sometimes marked on the road and there is a bikeway to various suburbs alongside the River Torrens. By law cyclists must wear a helmet at all times.

On campus, bikes can be locked on bike railings only. If you forget to bring your own bike locks, you can borrow locks from the Security Office (located on Hughes Plaza). Three bike sheds are also available on the North Terrace campus. To access the sheds, you need an access code to use with your ID swipe card (Card Services can add that to your card for you).
