Conditions for funding

In order to reduce the administrative workload on Faculty and School Peer Network Coordinators, the Transition Unit has kept its conditions of funding to the minimum required for accountability and analysis of programs.  Hence, Peer Networking Coordinators are simply required to:

  • Submit a written proposal to the Transition Unit as to their requirements in setting up or continuing their peer networking program (see checklist)
  • Provide the Transition Unit with a list of mentors and mentees (participating new students) along with their student ID numbers, email and postal addresses and degree program names as soon as practicable (template provided by Transition Unit)
  • Provide a brief summary report to the Transition Unit at the end of their respective program to assist with overall planning and peer networking development (template provided by Transition Unit)

Time Lines

Proposals to the Transition Unit

It is strongly recommended that Faculties and Schools hold discussions with the Transition Unit about potential new programs in the following year before the end of August in the current year.  This allows for timely recruitment of peer mentors and timely submission of proposals to the Transition Unit to accommodate planning and budgeting needs.

Recruitment of Peer Mentors

It is preferable to recruit next year’s peer mentors by the end of September (October at the latest) in the current year.  This allows time to meet with new potential mentors about their applications prior to exams and final assessments taking over, and to meet with experienced mentors about their roles.

Registration of mentees (first year participating students)

If you intend to hold your introduction day prior to Orientation Week you need to have online registration forms available well in advance so that prospective students can browse the website and see the closing registration date.  It helps signal that they need to take action BEFORE the academic year commences.

Training and Introduction days

The Transition Unit needs to know when Faculties and Schools are planning their first introduction event so that mentor training days can be organised in advance. As suitable rooms for generic training need to be booked months in advance this information needs to be provided to the Transition Unit as early as possible and by the end of December at the latest.

Websites

Faculty and School websites ideally should have a section on peer networking so that prospective students can link to the local page from the First-Year Student website.  The First-Year website will keep an updated list of current networking programs and the closing date for registrations, as well as contact details of the local Coordinator/s.  The websites need to be updated with correct dates and information by the time offers are made in January each year.  It is preferable to have the websites updated in December.
