Adelaide Abroad

The University of Adelaide Australia

How much will it cost?

Tuition fees are waived by each exchange institution for incoming students. All other costs are the responsibility of the student.

Preparing a budget

When working out your budget, you should consider the following costs:

  • Accommodation
  • Meals
  • Travel expenses
  • Passport and visa costs
  • Health and/or travel insurance
  • Any other incidental costs
  • Entertainment

Costs will vary widely across our range of partners – as a very rough guide students would need between AUD$1500-2000 per month. Cost of living information is available from our partner institutions.

Insurance

Private health and travel insurance:

Due to the high cost of health care in most countries of the world, it is essential that some form of health insurance covers you while you are away.

You are also strongly advised to purchase travel insurance (this is usually packaged as a travel/health insurance scheme) that will last at least until your arrival at your host university.  This will usually cover you for loss of luggage, cancellation of flights and any medical situations that may arise during your journey, among other complications.

Further information regarding insurance can be found at: Pre-Departure Guide.

University of Adelaide insurance:
The University of Adelaide covers, free of charge, all students and staff travelling overseas on ‘University business’.  This includes students participating in exchange programmes.  There are, however, conditions of which you should be aware:

  • The period of overseas travel cannot exceed 180 days – this means that students studying overseas for two semesters are not covered.
  • Cover will only be provided while you are studying at the host university.  Non-study travel will be covered for a maximum of two weeks.  Should you be planning to travel before and after your exchange, you will need to purchase additional insurance.

Further information regarding insurance can be found in the Pre-Departure Guide.

For more information please contact Adelaide Abroad.

HECS-HELP, fees, Austudy, Abstudy

Financial assistance for some students is available through OS-Help. This is a loan scheme administered by DEEWR that allows students to borrow up to $5,299 (2009) per six month study period overseas for a maximum of two study periods.  Currently, a 20% loan fee applies, however, for loans paid after 1 January 2010 this fee has been abolished.  Please contact andrew.harkersmith@adelaide.edu.au for more information.

The primary criteria for eligibility are:

  • must be an Australian citizen or the holder of a permanent humanitarian visa
  • must have completed one year of full-time study before studying overseas (24 University of Adelaide units)
  • must have 0.5 of a year of full time study remaining on return from overseas (12 University of Adelaide units)
  • must be receiving status towards an Adelaide degree for the studies undertaken overseas
  • must be enrolled FT at an approved overseas higher education provider.

Students who already qualify for AUSTUDY and ABSTUDY may be able to continue to claim for the time they spend overseas. This is because they remain enrolled at the University of Adelaide and are still working towards their Adelaide degree whilst they are overseas.

As students participating in the exchange programs remain enrolled at the University of Adelaide while studying overseas, they liable for their HECS-HELP loan obligation or their International Student tuition fees. In this way, places are funded for incoming exchange students.
