Study Abroad
If there is an institution at which you would like to study as part of your degree, but with which the University of Adelaide does not have an exchange agreement, you may wish to consider enrolling as a study abroad student.
You may not realise that there is a difference between study abroad and exchange! Here are the basics:
|
Exchange |
Study Abroad |
| Host institution and the University of Adelaide must have a signed reciprocal agreement | Host institution can be any university of the student's choice |
| University of Adelaide students remain enrolled in courses at Adelaide and accrue HECS/tuition fees - no tuition fees are paid to host institution | Students pay tuition fees directly to the host institution and are not enrolled at the University of Adelaide during their study abroad |
| Host universities are considered to be on par with the University of Adelaide (credit is likely to be granted as long as course content is a sufficient match) | Student will need to ensure chosen host institution is acceptable for credit |
| Places available dependent upon reciprocity; applications assessed by Global Learning | Student applies directly to host institution; Global Learning balances do not count |
| Global Learning provides application instructions and assists students with their applications | Student must obtain application information independently, however Global Learning may be able to assist with supporting letters and couriering |
| Students' eligibility for Centrelink does not usually change as they remain enrolled at an Australian university | Students may no longer be eligible for Centrelink |
| Students may be eligible for OS-HELP loans | Students may be eligible for OS-HELP loans |
| Students must obtain faculty approval for their studies in order to receive credit | Students must obtain faculty approval for their studies in order to receive credit |
If you are interested in studying abroad, you should contact the host institution to find out what your options are. If you aren't sure if the institution or program will be a legitimate option, please contact us and we can try to help you determine this.
Most importantly, you will need to get faculty approval well before you depart to ensure that your Faculty or School is willing to give credit for the study upon your return.
