Bonus Points & Access Schemes
From 2016, previous bonus point schemes have been replaced with two new schemes that will be administered by SATAC.
The two new schemes are the Universities Language, Literacy and Mathematics Bonus Scheme and the Universities Equity Scheme.
Universities Language, Literacy
& Mathematics Bonus Scheme
The Universities Language, Literacy and Mathematics Bonus Scheme encourages students to strengthen their preparation for undergraduate studies by undertaking a language other than English, or specified English and Mathematics subjects. With the objective to encourage enrolments into these subjects rather than reward outcomes, no higher bonuses will be granted for higher achievement.
The Scheme will apply to all programs offered by the University of Adelaide except the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery and the Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience).
Students will be awarded two points, up to a total maximum of four points, for successfully completing a subject in any one of the four categories:
- 20 credits of a LOTE in the Languages Learning Area (not including the subject Language and Culture – two 10 credit Australian Indigenous language subjects can be paired in lieu of a 20 credit LOTE)
- 2END20 English Studies or 2ECS20 English Communications
- 2MDS20 Mathematical Studies
- 2MSC20 Specialist Mathematics
Successful completion is defined as gaining an overall grade of C- or better.
Subject bonuses can be used for a period of three years. Students undertaking the International Baccalaureate or interstate senior secondary certificates in Australia are also eligible to receive bonuses under this Scheme.
Universities Equity Scheme
The University of Adelaide aims to improve access to tertiary education for students who are under-represented at university through access schemes such as the Universities Equity Scheme. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can also utilise the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Access Entry Scheme.
The Universities Equity Scheme will provide bonuses in two ways: bonuses for all students in certain specified schools and bonuses for individuals in other schools. Eligible students will receive five bonus points in the calculation of their selection ranks.
The Scheme will apply to all programs offered by the University of Adelaide.
SATAC will contact all SA/NT schools in July each year regarding whether their students will be eligible for a schools-based bonus in the following year. The classification of individual schools may change from year to year.
Students will not need to apply for a school-based bonus — any such bonuses will automatically be applied by SATAC in the calculation of students’ selection ranks.
Interstate non-border schools attracting equity bonuses will be identified using a subset of the criteria. Schools attracting bonuses will be identified on an annual basis when data for all criteria becomes available.
Students in other schools will be able to make an application under the Scheme to demonstrate their individual disadvantage. Students will be eligible under the Scheme where, in the year they gain their ATAR:
- they or their parents are in receipt of a Centrelink means-tested income support payment, or
- they are the holders of a Health Care Card, or
- they are the holder of a School Card.
Details of students who receive an individual equity bonus will be stored by SATAC so that they can receive their equity bonus in future applications (while they are still eligible to apply on the basis of their year 12 studies).
Application for Individual Bonuses
Students can apply for consideration under the Universities Equity Scheme by completing an online application from the SATAC website . Applications for the Scheme will not be available from the universities' websites.
For applicants who are eligible for Year 12 bonus points, these will be applied to the university aggregate from which selection ranks are calculated. The Year 12 selection rank for the university or program listed as a preference will be ATAR which corresponds to the revised aggregate.
The Universities Equity Scheme awards 5 bonus points for eligible students, whilst the Universities Language, Literacy and Mathematics Bonus Scheme awards 2 or 4 points for eligible students. An individual student can receive a maximum of 9 bonus points under both schemes.
You can find more details about the new schemes on the SATAC website or by calling (08) 8224 4000.
