Research in the Elder Conservatorium of Music
The Elder Conservatorium of Music is recognised internationally as a specialist music institution. It has the longest history of any music school in Australia, stretching back 125 years.
It has numbered many of Australia’s most renowned musicians among its staff and alumni. Located in the centre of the city on North Terrace – Adelaide’s cultural boulevard – the Conservatorium is a vital part of the life of Adelaide, a city celebrated for its rich and diverse artistic tradition.
The Elder Conservatorium of Music offers PhD and Masters degrees by research in all specialisations in music, including composition, musicology, ethnomusicology, performance, music technology and music education.
The Conservatorium recognises the significance of music to the cultural life of society. Through its research programs, it encourages the development of new parameters of artistic and scholarly endeavour that contribute to the advancement of knowledge and practice in the art of music. Postgraduate students have access to excellent resources including the Elder Music Library, the Electronic Music Unit and Elder Hall.

Specific audition requirements for the Music Performance specialisation
Local, interstate and international applicants for Music Performance must submit a recording of their performances with their application as evidence of their professional standing. It can either be a CD or DVD recording. The recording must be clearly labelled with the applicant’s name, instrument specialisation, the date on which the recording was made, and whether it represents a live performance, commercial release, radio broadcast etc.
A letter of verification (preferably from a teacher) should also be enclosed stating that the recording is a true representation of the applicant’s performance.
Specific folio requirements for the Music Composition specialisation
Composition applicants should submit a hard copy folio of original works (or arrangements, if they contain significant original content) that include three recently completed compositions.

Specific audition requirements for the Music Technology specialisation
Applicants should supply either (or both) of:
- CD or DVD recording of work (30 minutes) that demonstrates sophisticated use of technology to create and/or perform music AND/OR
- Examples of music software developed by the applicant with appropriate documentation.
Applicants are expected to have familiarity with computer operating systems and the necessary knowledge of hardware, software and programming appropriate to their field of research.
