Research in the School of Agriculture Food & Wine

The School of Agriculture, Food & Wine provides a world-class concentration of scientific research, education and infrastructure at the Waite Campus of the University of Adelaide. The School provides an outstanding research environment and is able to offer projects that will stimulate and excite all students with an interest in making new scientific discoveries and developing a career in scientific research.

The Adelaide node of The Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics is part of the School and has internationally important projects aimed at improving the salt and drought tolerance of cereals.

The School has well-established links with many partner organisations which adds considerably to the research opportunities available. The School is a member of the Wine Innovation Cluster, a recent initiative bringing together all wine-related research across the Waite Campus. Staff of the School\x92s Wine Science and Business Group are housed in the Wine Innovation Central building which opened in 2008 and is shared with the Australian Wine Research Institute.

The $32 million Plant Accelerator was opened in early 2010. This state-of-the-art greenhouse facility is the Adelaide branch of the Australian Plant Phenomics Facility. It houses the latest digital imaging technologies combined with high capacity computing and robotics to allow the automated, high throughput, continuous and non-destructive measurement of plant physical attributes (phenotype).

The FOODPlus Research Centre is a collaborative initiative between the University and the Women\x92s and Children\x92s Health Research Institute. It investigates the relationships between agriculture, food and health to better understand how agricultural products can contribute to improved nutrition and enhanced human health outcomes.

The University has further boosted research on the Waite Campus by establishing the Waite Research Institute. This initiative provides significant funding for 5 years to grow new collaborative research activities aimed at improving food security.

The Waite Campus is a rich collaborative environment for agricultural research that is unrivalled in the southern hemisphere. Students in the School are able to easily interact with scientists of the highest calibre who encourage them to \x93catch the vision\x94 and aspire to cutting-edge research.
