About Summer & Winter School

Q: Why Should I take a course during the summer and winter semester?

There are many reasons that students may choose to take a courses as part of the Summer & Winter School at the University of Adelaide. These include:

  • To accelerate their study
  • To catch up on missed or unsuccessfully completed subjects
  • To spread their study load over the whole year.
  • To broaden their educational experiences by taking a course at the University of Adelaide
  • Want to spend a summer in Australia studying at a top sandstone institution

  • To get ahead of peers in the workplace
  • Enjoy learning in an intensive mode course structure
  • Want to develop knowledge for personal interest

Q: I am not a current student at the University of Adelaide. Can I still take a Summer & Winter School course?

Yes, you can. There are several ways in which you can enrol in the Summer & Winter School if you are not a University of Adelaide student. Potential students may enrol as Cross-Institutional, Non-Award or Study Abroad students.

Q: What are my responsibilities as a Summer & Winter School student?

You will be responsible for ensuring:

  • Your enrolment is correct
  • You have correctly filled in a HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP form if required
  • You have permission from you home institution to gain credit transfers if you are enrolled as a Cross-Institutional student
  • You check MyUni and your emails a least a few times per week
  • You do not have any timetable clashes if you are enrolling in more than one course
  • You are aware of the student code of conduct and plagarism policy

Enrolment

Q: How many Summer & Winter School courses can I enrol in at any one time?

The answer to this question varies depending on the wishes of various Faculties/Schools. For example, the Business School and the School of Economics ask that students only enrol in one course in Summer School and one course in Winter School. Whereas the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences recommend that students enrol in no more than two courses in Summer School and two courses in Winter School.

Students are strongly encouraged to contact their Faculty/School about how many Summer & Winter courses they are permitted to enrol in at one time.

Q: How do I enrol in a Summer & Winter School course?

University of Adelaide Students

University of Adelaide students can enrol in Summer & Winter School courses online through Access Adelaide and no longer need to apply to their Faculty/School for permission. For more information please see the University of Adelaide Students webpage.

Please Note: Students have overall responsibility for ensuring that the course they take fits within their program plan. Students are responsible for ensuring that they meet all requirements and restrictions relating to their chosen Summer School course. It is recommended that student seek clarification from their Faculty/School if they have any queries.

Cross Institutional Students

Students from other institutions who want to undertake summer and winter semester study at the University of Adelaide should complete a Cross-Institutional Enrolment Form and submit it to the relevant School or Faculty. For more information please see the Cross Institutional Students webpage.

It is the student’s own responsibility to liaise with their home institution to ensure that they will be awarded credit for the chosen course.

Study for Personal Interest Students

Individuals who are not university students and want to undertake summer or winter semester study on a non-award basis should complete a Non-Award Application and Enrolment Form with the relevant School or Faculty Office.

International Non-Award students are required to meet the same standards of English proficiency as any student seeking admission to academic programs at the University of Adelaide. Students are expected to be proficient in speaking, reading, listening to and writing English. Further details are available here.

Facilities & Assistance

Q: What are the Library opening hours during Summer & Winter School semesters?

The Library website provides information relating to the opening hours of each of the University's libraries during the Summer & Winter School semesters.

Q: Will the Maths Drop-In Centre be available during Summer and Winter School?

The Maths Drop-In Centre is a comfortable place where undergraduate students can consult with a tutor on any aspect of maths related to their studies. The Maths Drop-In Centre aims to help students develop the skills to learn maths and solve problems on their own.

The Maths Drop-In Centre is located on Level 3 East, Hub Central, North Terrace Campus.  No appointment is required - just drop in and talk to the tutors on duty.

The Maths Drop-In Centre will be open most weekdays during Summer and Winter Schools with some exceptions - please check their website for current opening hours before dropping in!

Q: Will the Writing Centre be available during Summer School?

The Writing Centre's Summer and Winter School opening times are to be confirmed. More information can be found on their website.

Q: How do you organise alternative exam arrangements?

During Summer & Winter School alternative exam arrangements can be made by liaising directly with the relevant Faculty/School.
