PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions)

What is PASS?

PASS is an internationally accredited Program and is applied in over 35 countries.  PASS was introduced to the University of Adelaide in 2011 in the School of Economics.  In 2013 there will be over 10 PASS programs across the five Faculties.

PASS classes are applied to specific courses, rather than generically to Schools or Faculties.

PASS programs in specific courses involve weekly, voluntary, free, Peer-facilitated study groups led by students who have excelled in the relevant courses.

The classes provide an informal environment in which participating students can compare notes, discuss concepts and develop academic skills for ongoing learning and success.

The choice of materials covered in PASS classes is driven by the participating students’ identified needs.

Difference between PASS classes and tutorials

Tutors will often directly answer questions raised during tutorial sessions and will revise concepts that students have struggled with from lectures.

PASS Leaders do not reteach, but assist PASS students to work together to find their own answers using:

  • Lecture notes
  • Tutorial materials
  • Textbooks
  • Group discussions and creative exercises

It's a great way to consolidate learning and develop techniques for effective study.
