Veterinary Referral Services

The veterinary referral service offers consultations with veterinarians who have specialized training in surgery, internal medicine including oncology and dermatology, anesthesiology, opthamology and diagnostic imaging.

All specialist referrals require a referral letter from your veterinarian. Appointments can be made by contacting reception on 8313 1999. Specialist veterinarians are on specific days unless in an emergency.

Please allow an extended consultation time up to 2 hours for some cases.

Your clinical notes, laboratory results and images will be required from your veterinarian.

    Clinical Services

    Our specialist anaesthetists provide specialist anaesthesia and analgesia for patients undergoing surgery and diagnostic procedures within the Companion Animal Health Centre. Specialist services include:

    • Sedation, anaesthesia and analgesia of complex cases
    • Stabilization and anaesthetic management of the high risk patient
    • Comprehensive and advanced monitoring of all anaesthetised cases
    • Advanced catheterization techniques
      • Arteries for direct arterial blood pressure measurement and blood gas analysis
      • Major veins for central venous pressure measurement
    • Use of drugs that support blood pressure when required
    • Comprehensive peri-operative pain management for all patients
    • Individualised pain management, including continuous infusions
    • Local and Regional nerve blocks

    The referral surgery service provides a specialist opinion on all orthopaedic and soft tissue problems including:

    Orthopaedics and neurosurgery
    • Fractures
    • Osteoarthritis
    • Cruciate ligament disease
    • Patella luxation
    • Osteochrondosis dissecans
    • Angular limb deformities
    • Hip luxation and joint instability
    • Achilles and patella ligament ruptures
    • Spinal problems including intervertebral disk disease and wobbler syndrome

    Specialist services include:

    • Fracture fixation systems including plating, linear external fixation, circular external fixation and hybrid external fixation
    • Arthroscopic diagnosis and treatment of elbow dysplasia and shoulder problems
    • Joint arthrodesis
    • Hip toggle, ileofemoral suture and transarticular pinning
    • Juvenile Pubic Symphysiodesis
    • Total hip replacement
    • Spinal surgery including cervical and lumbar hemilaminectomies, vertebral corpectomies, ventral slot cervical decompressions and lumbosacral stabilisation

    The Medicine Service provides a second opinion on all medical problems of dogs and cats, including:

    • Infectious diseases, including feline immunodeficiency and leukaemia viruses
    • Chronic vomiting or diarrhoea
    • Coughing, sneezing or breathing difficulties
    • Blood disorders, including anaemia
    • High blood pressure
    • Liver problems
    • Kidney failure
    • Urinary tract problems, including stones and incontinence
    • Diabetes and other causes of excessive thirst
    • Fainting and collapse
    • Fever of unknown origin
    • Ascites and pleural effusion
    • Unexplained weight loss
    • Illnesses with vague symptoms
    • Complex medical problems

    The medicine service integrates with other specialist services to obtain a diagnosis and provide optimum treatment. Specific services include:

    • Evaluation of complex or difficult cases
    • Interpretation and monitoring of blood and urine test results for optimum outcomes
    • Clinico-radiological interpretation of diagnostic imaging results
    • Endoscopic investigation
    • Blood pressure monitoring and interpretation
    • Advanced medical care including placement of feeding tubes, oxygen supplementation
    • Individualised treatment plans encompassing drugs and nutrition

    • Allergy testing (including 60 allergen skin testing)

      • Review of case material and development of logical further investigation and management options.
      • Thorough clinical staging including physical examination, appropriate laboratory investigation, bone marrow aspiration, ultrasound examination, radiography, MRI.
      • Integrated flexible case management with on-site access to specialist anesthesia, surgery, pathology and clinical pathology services.
