Outcome Objectives for Veterinary Science

Vision Statement 2 indicates that the curriculum will be outcome-focussed. In essence this means defining the competencies and knowledge base that students need to acquire in order to become a veterinary practitioner. The Outcome Objectives provide the basic structure for defining the outcomes in three broad areas: Veterinary Professional and Practical Competencies, Underpinning Veterinary Sciences and the University of Adelaide Graduate Attributes.

 

Veterinary Professional and Practical Competencies

Gathers relevant information on presenting problems from owner or third party (CS01)  Communicates effectively with owner of patient or third parties (IS01)

Obtains relevant veterinary history of animal and its cohorts including illness, treatment, management and insurance (CS02) Communicates and works effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary veterinary team (IS02)

Performs a comprehensive physical examination or selects appropriate components using a direct, systematic approach (CS05)  Able to manage conflict, pain, stress and other health issues in self, patients, owners or third parties, and members of the veterinary team (IS05)  Maintains an ethical approach and manages ethical problems and euthanasia (PB05)  Performs appropriate diagnostic tests and imaging investigations (PS05)

 Produces and maintains an accurate, complete and confidential record of patient’s care, is competent with veterinary databases (PS06)
Makes an accurate assessment of patient's problems & formulates a list of differential diagnoses (CS07)   Demonstrates respect for the role and function of all involved in animal care (PB07)
Safely administers medication to the patient (PS07)
