Program Overview

Objectives of the Veterinary Science Program

  • To provide students with a thorough grounding in basic sciences relevant to veterinary science with a deep understanding of the function of complex biological systems.
  • To ensure students gain the knowledge and attributes for undertaking further veterinary science studies.
  • To provide graduates with skills in finding, critically evaluating, integrating and presenting scientific information about vertebrate and invertebrate species or systems function.
  • To produce graduates with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, who have the ability to solve problems and adapt in challenging environments.
  • To expose students to the areas of biosecurity, aquaculture, production and companion animals and equine studies, and scientific research.

Curriculum

This course can be completed in three years of full time study. Go to the curriculum page for more information.

Bachelor of Science (Animal Science: Pre-Veterinary)

Level 1

  • Integrating subject areas including Biology, Chemistry, Perspectives in Animal Science, Physics, Principles in Animal Welfare, Behaviour & Ethics, Statistical Practice

Level 2

  • Integrating subject areas including Biochemistry, Form and Function, Veterinary Skills, Animal Breeding & Genetics, Animal Nutrition & Metabolism

Level 3

  • Integrating subject areas including Veterinary Skills, Veterinary Immunology, Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Parasitology, Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology

Program Structure

  • Basic sciences studies integrating chemistry, biology, physics and statistics along with other areas relevant to veterinary practice are undertaken in the first year. This is followed with subjects essential to later veterinary training. Practical veterinary and research skills will also be introduced in this program.
  • This program is designed to provide students with the foundation knowledge and skills they require to progress to further studies in both postgraduate veterinary programs and a range of different scientific disciplines.

Entry Requirements

  • SATAC Code: 324491
  • Prerequisites: Chemistry & Mathematical Studies
  • Assumed Knowledge: Physics
  • Campuses: North Terrace and Roseworthy (first year), Roseworthy (later years)

See also: Application & Admissions web site.

Further Studies

  • It is expected that most students undertaking the program will progress to the graduate program in veterinary science which will enable them to practice as a veterinarian and to pursue occupations open to registered veterinarians. Students not continuing to the graduate program are expected to gain employment as animal science professionals in a range of agricultural and livestock industries, zoos, biosecurity and animal welfare organisations.

Additional Information

  • The program is primarily based on the Roseworthy Campus where students have access to production and intensive animal facilities required for the teaching program. * Note: for 2009 only, some level II Anatomy and Physiology will be delivered at North Terrace whilst relevant Roseworthy facilities are completed.

  • Students will be required to gain 12 weeks of practical experience in animal handling and management with particular animal enterprises and farms prior to commencement of the postgraduate clinical program.

  • The postgraduate program will provide the necessary practical skills to meet the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Day 1 Graduate Competencies.

  • Extramural clinical work will be undertaken during the postgraduate program.

  • The final year of the graduate program will be structured as an internship with emphasis on practical veterinary skills.

  • Students will gain broad clinical experience in the postgraduate program to achieve omni-competence by the time of graduation. The course will introduce many career opportunities to the graduates including all aspects of veterinary science both traditional and emerging.

International Prospective Students

Update: Veterinary Science at the University of Adelaide

Undergraduate entry pathway - Commencing 2008:

Bachelor of Science (Animal Science: Pre-Veterinary)

Admission Requirements:

  • International Equivalents to SACE Stage 2: Maths Studies and Chemistry.
  • University of Adelaide IELTS language standard

International fees for this program are still to be formalised, but are expected to be A$35,000 each year for all 6 years of the program.

International program requirements are yet to be formalised, but are expected to be higher than those for the pre-existing Bachelor of Science (Animal Science). Entry will be competitive and applicants will be ranked, requiring a TER score within 3% of the TER scores gained by the top ranked students. The TER score for the 2008 Level one intake was 93.2.

** This program is awaiting CRICOS registration & professional accreditation.

Veterinary Science at the University of Adelaide will have a focus on Australian livestock production, equine health, aquaculture, pathology and biosecurity and involve input from a range of partner institutions, government agencies and industry. Following accreditation, students completing the 6-year program will be eligible for registration as Veterinarians.

The 3-year Bachelor of Science (Animal Science: Pre-Veterinary) is the first part of the veterinary science program. Students will be accepted into Level I in 2008 subject to final program approval. A 3-year postgraduate Veterinary Science degree, commencing in 2011 and focussing on the clinical and professional skills required by veterinarians, completes the program. Level 1 involves studies at both North Terrace and Roseworthy Campuses of the University, while the rest of the program will be based at the Roseworthy Campus. Students satisfactorily completing the Bachelor of Science (Animal Science: Pre-Veterinary) will gain entry into the postgraduate program.

Veterinary Science at the University of Adelaide will consist of:

  • 3-year Bachelor of Science (Animal Science: Pre-Veterinary) program:
    • Level I courses commencing in 2008
    • Level I and II courses commencing in 2009
    • Level I, II and III courses commencing in 2010
  • 3-year Masters in Veterinary Science commencing in 2011 ** this name has not been approved and is not the favoured name

It is expected that entry into the Bachelor of Science (Animal Science: Pre-Veterinary) will be highly competitive. The Bachelor of Science (Animal Science), which has no SACE Stage 2 prerequisites, may provide a pathway for students. There will be an opportunity for high performing students completing Level I of the Bachelor of Science (Animal Science) to transfer into Level II of the Bachelor of Science (Animal Science: Pre-Veterinary) from 2009.
