OH&S Induction

The School of Veterinary Science has a duty of care, under the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act 1986, to provide employees with information, instruction, training and supervision necessary to enable them to perform their work in a manner that is both safe and without risk to their health.

The Induction process is applicable to new staff, students (Undergraduate and Postgraduate), visitors and volunteers. Personnel who transfer to new work areas, who are allocated new tasks, and those who are to perform any task not previously undertaken must receive suitable and adequate information, instruction and training for any task that they may be required to perform.

Within the University of Adelaide the induction process is grouped into three components, which are aligned with the National OH&S Level A Competencies, being relevant for employees without managerial or supervisory responsibilities.

Corporate Level Induction

As part of induction and continued employment, all University of Adelaide staff are required to successfully complete the OH&S Online Induction course (Online Training).

The Corporate Level Induction provides information regarding the legislative structure from the State Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act 1986, Regulations and Codes of Practice through to the University obligations and its established OH&S Policy framework.

The University's policies are identified to provide an understanding of the University's duty of care under the legislation and common law, the provisions relating to the Occupational Health and Safety structure in the University, the roles and responsibilities of health and safety representatives, occupational health and safety committees and the resolution of OH&S issues. Area Level Induction

School of Veterinary Science - Induction Form
The Area Level Induction is delivered by the School Safety Officer/Deputy Safety Officers or School Manager and provides information on the School's policies and systems. Workplace procedures are dealt with such as the School's Safety Structure, Emergency Control Organisation, Laboratory Safety, Chemical Management, Fieldwork Procedures, Incident Reporting and Investigation, Training, Hazard Identification and Risk Control.
This can also include a School Introduction delivered by the Head of School or School Manager which provides an outline of the School's Technical, Administration, Finance and Student Service areas and contacts. The induction packages are delivered each month.

Local Level Induction

The Local level induction is critical and is delivered by the Supervisor of the new staff member or student. The Supervisors have a duty of care to instruct their new staff or students on how to perform the tasks or the functions of their duties in a manner that is safe and without risk to their health. Furthermore, the supervisor is required to provide supervision to the new staff member or student until they can show that they can perform the task or function in a manner that is safe to themselves and others in the workplace.
