The University Coat of Arms

The University's Armorial Bearings, granted by the College of Arms London in 1925, remains the official symbol of the University of Adelaide. Degree certificates and official greetings, Chancellorial and Vice-Chancellorial materials and other ceremonial publications continue to feature the Coat of Arms in full colour. The full colour reproduction true to the argent, gold and azure colours of the heraldic description is only used for these ceremonial purposes.

Appropriate Use

The Coat of Arms may be used for the following:

  • Degree parchments
  • Graduation programmes
  • University Medals
  • As architectural features on building – BUT NOT AS A SIGN
  • Special Awards
  • Special merchandise as identified and approved by the Director, Marketing & Strategic Communications.

Distribution and use of the Coat of Arms is managed through the Director, Marketing & Strategic Communications.

Placement

The Coat of Arms should always take a superior place to all other words, logos and graphic identifiers. If the words “The University of Adelaide” are to be used in conjunction with the Coat of Arms, they should always appear below the line of the lowest part of the scroll. Nothing of visual significance should be set above the Coat of Arms, with the exception of borders and descriptors as are often found on a parchment or official document.

The Coat of Arms may be used in conjunction with the official Coat of Arms of another institution in such a way as to observe the normal practices of heraldic law, offering superior position only to the Coat of Arms of a superior institution (such as the monarch of a sovereign state).

The University of Adelaide - Coat of Arms

The University of Adelaide Coat of Arms as described in the Calendar is as follows:

"Per pale Or and Argent an Open Book proper edged Gold on a Chief Azure five mullets, one of eight, two of seven, one of six and one of five points of the second, representing the Constellation of the Southern Cross". The Motto associated with the Arms is: SUB CRUCE LUMEN 'The light (of learning) under the (Southern) Cross'.

Mono Variation

The mono version below is uncoloured, to illustrate the conventional heraldic hatching used to represent colours. This system dates from the seventeenth century. The motto is in black letters on a white scroll, which has black outlines.
