Other Graphic Identifiers

The University of Adelaide is richly endowed with many visual assets. Many of these have become established as well-recognised symbols associated with the University or aspects of the University in their own right. These visual icons are specified graphic identifiers that may be incorporated as a specific element in the corporate identity.

Southern Cross Motif

Illustrates the University of Adelaide motto - SUB CRUCE LUMEN - 'The light (of learning) under the (Southern) Cross'.

The University Lion

The University Lion

The balcony over the main (south) entry into Bonython Hall features two carved lions, each supporting a coat of arms. One lion is supporting the Bonython family coat of arms and is known as the Bonython Lion. The other is a supporting the University's coat of arms and is known as the University Lion. For many years, photographs of the University Lion have been used to convey the University's position as one of the great old sandstone universities of the world.

The University Lion can be used as a watermark or outline graphic identifier for the University as a whole. Artwork is available from the Marketing & Strategic Communications Branch, from whom permission must be sought before the University Lion may be used.

The National Wine Centre Barrel Ribs

The Eastern entry into the National Wine Centre of Australia (part of the University of Adelaide) features a wide sweeping ramp leading to it from the Hackney Road car park. This ramp includes a lattice structure forming the outside radius facade of the ramp that takes on the appearance of the ribs of a wine barrel. This distinctive architectural feature has relevance in describing the purpose of the National Wine Centre of Australia.
