University Name

The University of Adelaide has trademark protection for The University of Adelaide™ as well as Adelaide University™. Prior use of both names dates back at least 100 years. The formal name of the University is "The University of Adelaide". "Adelaide University" should not be used in formal writing, except where it is legally part of a name (for example, the Adelaide University Union).

In body text, the University should be referred to as "the University of Adelaide" after which it can be described simply as "the University". On occasion, it may be appropriate to refer to the University as "Adelaide". To avoid confusion between the University and the city of Adelaide, the use of "Adelaide" should only follow a previous use of the full name.

To "T" or not to "t"?
When the University’s name is used at the beginning of a sentence, use capital "T" ("The University of Adelaide"). When the name appears in a stand-alone context, in upper and lower case, use capital "T". When the name appears between inverted commas, use capital "T". When the name appears in the middle of a sentence, do not use capital "T".

When the name is shortened to "the University", the rules relating to capital "T" are the same as above. The "U" in "University" should be capitalised at all times when the word refers to the University of Adelaide.
