Image mapsImage maps allow multiple links, or hotspots, to be created over a single image. These are generally done by defining shapes over areas of an image. These are usually rectangles but can also be circles or polygons. Their use is becoming less common than in the past, however they can still be used on University websites as long as a text equivalent is provided with the image map to satisfy accessibility guidelines. Image maps can be created by experienced web authors using Dreamweaver. TMS web maintainers who are interested in using image maps on their sites can contact Online Media to discuss their requirements. Creating an Image Map in DreamweaverFirst insert the image using Dreamweaver, making sure you specify alternate text for the image for accessibility. Click on the image to select it. The image properties will then be displayed with the image map options at the bottom left of the window.
Click on the hotspot shape for the link and holding down the mouse button, drag it to the required size over the image before releasing the button. The selected area will be highlighted.
Enter the link for that hotspot into the link properties.
Repeat this process for all the hotspots required for the image.
