Production of Fungal Biomass Protein Using Microfungi from Winery Wastewater Treatment
The Australian wine industry produces a substantial quantity of wastes containing high levels of carbohydrate-rich organics, which are biodegradable and naturally rich in nutrients, making them ideal precursors for biomass protein production. The Water Environment Biotechnology Laboratory (WEBL) at the University of Adelaide is carrying out a project that aims to identify suitable fungal microorganisms to transform winery wastes into animal feed with high protein content. WEBL is led by Assoc. Prof. Bo Jin, and is affiliated with the Wastewater Research Unit of SA Water. It is carrying out ground-breaking research in water reuse and recycling, particularly in finding potentially valuable products in wastewater resources. To learn more listen to the podcast below of Mr Adrian Hunter describing the principles behind the process.

Adrian also presented his project at Water Pitchfest 2008, a forum aimed at linking innovators and investors in the water sector. Click on the YouTube Video below to watch his presentation.
