Student's first paper
proanthocyanidins and chemotherapy
Amy (Ker Cheah) has just recently written up her 2007 honours year work into a paper that has been accepted by the Journal Cancer Biology and Therapy. Amy was co-supervised by Dr Sue Bastian of Wine and Horticulture and Associate Professor Gordon Howarth of Agricultural and Animal Science at the University of Adelaide. This paper illustrates how grape seed extracts can protect against cell and morphological damage caused by chemotherapy in rat intestines. This protection is thought to be imparted by proanthocyanidins, polyphenolic compounds that are found in a variety of foods but are particularly concentrated in grape seeds and also red wine. This exemplifies the cross disciplinary approach of the University bringing together wine and cancer specialists. To find out more follow the link below and listen to Amy talk about her work.
