Can bees increase the fruit set and berry quality? It is as yet unclear whether insect visitation influences the development and quality of grapes. Grape flowers are wind pollinated, but they produce an aromatic secretion that is very attractive to insects. This could indicate that insect pollination also plays a role in fruit set. An increased fruit set is known to decrease grape size, which improves quality. Therefore, the presence of insects could enhance grape quality. In this project, Hogendoorn and Collins will experimentally assess the effects of honeybee visitation on fruit set, berry size and quality. In addition, they will compare insect visitation in organically and conventionally managed vineyards, to find out whether free ecosystem services provided by native pollinators can be enhanced through crop management strategies. |
