FOODplus Research Centre

FOODplus Research Centre is a 5 year joint venture between the University of Adelaide and the Women's and Children's Health Research Institute. FOODplus includes staff from the Child Nutrition Research Centre at Women's and Children's Health Research Institute (WCHRI) and the Functional Food Group of the University.

Directly connecting Agriculture to Health has rarely been attempted in research terms and yet is one of the most logical of concepts. If people grow and consume nutrient rich foods they will have better health outcomes than those consuming energy rich-nutrient poor foods. In the Developing World the direct connection between the nutritional content of local foods and health outcomes seems easier to visualise. In developed countries the connection between Agriculture and Health has often had to be bridged by the use of vitamin and mineral supplements. Conversely, Health researchers have only rarely interacted with agriculturalists and food producers. The input of clinical researchers to the research directions of plant and animal breeders is an exciting new concept underpinning the Foodplus concept.
