A History of Excellence

The WRI continues a long history of excellence in agricultural research. With the generous bequest of 500 acres of land Pastoralist and Public Benefactor Peter Waiteand Urbrrae house by Peter Waite to the University of Adelaide, the Waite Agricultural Research Institute was established in 1924 as a world class research facility. More than 80 years later the Waite campus is Australia's leading research, education and commercialisation precinct for agricultural science.

On the afternoon of Friday 11 May 2012, the WRI will sponsor the second annual campus community event commemorating the anniversary of Peter Waite's birth. 'Peter Waite Day' provides an opportunity for staff from all the organisations co-located on the campus, as well as from the adjacent Urrbrae Agricultural High School, to gather and celebrate the legacy and remarkable foresight of Peter Waite, as well as further build the research networks and collaborations that make the Waite Campus unique.

For more information about the history of Peter Waite please visit the Urrbrae House Website.

"We have now reached a point when it behoves us to call science to our aid to a greater extent than hitherto has been done, otherwise we cannot hope to keep in the forefront." - Peter Waite 1913

Words from the Director

Roger Leigh

"Global food security is threatened by a unique convergence of climatic, environmental, economic and sociological issues that have created major challenges for agricultural production in Australia and across the world. The Waite Research Institute will harness the skills in the University of Adelaide and its partners to address these from paddock to plate." - Professor Roger Leigh
